Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Mark 3
Jesus Appoints the Twelve

13 Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. 14 He appointed twelve[a] that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach 15 and to have authority to drive out demons. 16 These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter), 17 James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means “sons of thunder”), 18 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD, Our God,
How Excellent,
How Mighty,
and How Wonderful is Your Holy Name!
And How True and Marvelous is Your Word!
Your Promises and Your Covenants are Forever,
For You Are Righteous and Holy,
And there is No Shadow Of Turning With You.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

A lot of people use the terms "Disciple" and "Apostle" interchangeably. However, they are two different words with two different meanings. Here are some stories which may illustrate the difference:

1. The Guru's Guru: Dan, the Dad of two of my most advanced students, grew up in India and was a disciple of a guru who trained him in Indian Classical Music. His guru was, in turn, a disciple of the incredible Sitar Player Ravi Shankar. (for those counting, that makes me three degrees of separation from the Legendary Sitar Player.) Dan told me of the grueling practice schedule he endured as a child. Even if he was in the middle of a soccer game, he would be called away to practice endless scales and runs on the very difficult instrument. He sure does know his stuff! We have long discussions about the differences between Eastern and Western Musical Traditions. However, due to the draconian nature of his training, he no longer plays sitar or even owns one. Somewhere along the way there was a disconnect between proficiency on the instrument and loving music. He prefers the music of The Beatles and the Grateful Dead, both of which show the influence of Indian Music. His guru was a disciple of Ravi Shanker. Then the guru became an apostle, as he took the knowledge he got from Shankar and passed it on to others. Dan started out as a disciple, but that is where the line ended.

However, Dan's discipline regarding practice has been passed onto his children and they do an hour a day at the piano and guitar, honing their craft. After a little less than two years, the little girl is playing Beethoven and Mozart and the boy is playing some serious guitar. My job as an "apostle" is to keep my little "disciples" loving music. I am thrilled with their progress but I hope Dan doesn't push them too hard and knock it out of balance.

2. The Naughtiest Thing I Ever Did: Just last week I told Dan this story. Because he is from India and loves The Beatles, I thought he would enjoy the story of "The Naughtiest Thing I Ever Did".

In March 1968, the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was scheduled to speak at the Harvard Law Forum about his new discipline called "Transcendental Meditation". Now, normally such an event would not capture my attention. But I was a huge fan of the Beatles, and the Beatles had become disciples of this person. There was no way I could attend a lecture at Harvard, as I was just a 15-year-old High School kid. However, a friend of mine somehow got some inside information that The Maharishi would be arriving at Logan Airport at 2:00PM the next day. Four of us Beatles Fans cooked up a scheme where we would hook school, buy some flowers, take the train to the Airport, and greet the guru as he got off the plane. (This was long before 9/11, the TSA, and Airport Security)

We had no trouble getting there, and walked right up to the boarding gate without being challenged. When the Maharishi came though the gate, I ran up to him with the flowers and kissed him on the cheek. He waved at us, and then we all went home on the MTA, triumphant and jubilant that we had pulled it off.

That evening, as I sat at dinner with my five siblings and both parents, I conversed about school as if nothing had happened. A little black-and-white TV set sat on the table droning the Six-O'Clock News. Then the announcer said:

"The Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was greeted at Logan Airport Today with a KISS..."

And there I was...on TV, in glorious Black and White, for all the world to see. Was I ever BUSTED. I never hooked school again.

Dan laughed at my story, and then added, "Of course, you KNOW that guy was a big fraud. Everybody in India knew it!" I did indeed know it, but, at the time, George Harrison was among his disciples. And I LOVED George Harrison. George tried to get the other Beatles interested, but it didn't pan out. The others realized the exploitative behavior of the guru and severed ties. So, at that point, they were neither disciples nor apostles.

3. Searching My Name: Every once in a while, it is a good thing to do a Search on your name to see what the Internet is saying about you. I did that very thing, and came up with the usual stuff, my parents' obituaries, graduating class, etc. Then I found myself mentioned on somebody's RESUME as his first music teacher. The man was the Director of Music at a Christian College, and had taken voice and piano with me when he was a very young child of five. He credited me with "Getting him started and teaching him to love music." I was so touched by that. He had been one of my youngest "disciples", and now he was an "apostle" of music...and a Christian too.

4. Today's Reading: In Today's Reading, we see Jesus choosing the "Twelve". At this point they are "disciples". They will sit at the feet of Jesus and LEARN from Him. They will see Him Preach, Teach, Heal, Raise People from the Dead, and Exorcise demons. They will pray together, eat together, and lodge together for three years. Later, Jesus sends them out two by two, and they have various levels of success. They are astounded that even the demons listen to them, and yet they also encounter some failures. At this point they become "apostles", meaning "messengers". It is not until Pentecost, when they are Filled With The Holy Spirit, that they become "The Apostles" with a capital "A".

There are some people who call themselves "Apostle So-and-So" as an office in the Church. This is in line with the words of the Apostle Paul who says:

11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: (Ephesians 4:11-16, KJV)

So, it is important that we make the distinction. Not all "disciples" end up being "apostles, but all "apostles" start out as "disciples".

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

"Ordaining of the Twelve Apostles"
James Tissot

_

he goeth up into a mountain, and calleth unto him whom he would: and they came unto him.

And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach, And to have power to
heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:
And Simon he surnamed Peter;

17 And James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder:

And Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Canaanite,

And Judas Iscariot, which also betrayed him: and they went into an house.

They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."

Psalm 71

1 In you, O Lord, I take refuge;
let me never be put to shame.
2 In your righteousness deliver me and rescue me;
incline your ear to me and save me.
3 Be to me a rock of refuge,
a strong fortress,* to save me,
for you are my rock and my fortress.

4 Rescue me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked,
from the grasp of the unjust and cruel.
5 For you, O Lord, are my hope,
my trust, O Lord, from my youth.
6 Upon you I have leaned from my birth;
it was you who took me from my mother’s womb.
My praise is continually of you.

7 I have been like a portent to many,
but you are my strong refuge.
8 My mouth is filled with your praise,
and with your glory all day long.
9 Do not cast me off in the time of old age;
do not forsake me when my strength is spent.
10 For my enemies speak concerning me,
and those who watch for my life consult together.
11 They say, ‘Pursue and seize that person
whom God has forsaken,
for there is no one to deliver.’

12 O God, do not be far from me;
O my God, make haste to help me!
13 Let my accusers be put to shame and consumed;
let those who seek to hurt me
be covered with scorn and disgrace.
14 But I will hope continually,
and will praise you yet more and more.
15 My mouth will tell of your righteous acts,
of your deeds of salvation all day long,
though their number is past my knowledge.
16 I will come praising the mighty deeds of the Lord God,
I will praise your righteousness, yours alone.

17 O God, from my youth you have taught me,
and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds.
18 So even to old age and grey hairs,
O God, do not forsake me,
until I proclaim your might
to all the generations to come.*
Your power 19and your righteousness, O God,
reach the high heavens.

You who have done great things,
O God, who is like you?
20 You who have made me see many troubles and calamities
will revive me again;
from the depths of the earth
you will bring me up again.
21 You will increase my honour,
and comfort me once again.

22 I will also praise you with the harp
for your faithfulness, O my God;
I will sing praises to you with the lyre,
O Holy One of Israel.
23 My lips will shout for joy
when I sing praises to you;
my soul also, which you have rescued.
24 All day long my tongue will talk of your righteous help,
for those who tried to do me harm
have been put to shame, and disgraced.
