Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Mark 1
Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit

21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”

25 “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!” 26 The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.

27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD, Our God, How Excellent,
How Wonderful is Your Most Holy Name!
We Lift Up Your Name and Worship You,
For You Alone Are Worthy,
You Alone Are LORD,
You Alone Are The Most HIGH.
LORD of HOSTS,
Ancient of Days,
Lion of Judah,
Rock of Ages,
Omnipotent, Omniscient, Omnipresent,
You Know the End from the Beginning and the Beginning From The End.
Righteous and True,
Just and Holy,
There is No Shadow of Turning With You,
Even When We Are Unfaithful, You Remain Faithful,
And Your Laws, Precepts, Judgments,
and Promises are PERFECT.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

Psalm 93

1 The Lord is king, he is robed in majesty;
the Lord is robed, he is girded with strength.
He has established the world; it shall never be moved;
2 your throne is established from of old;
you are from everlasting.

3 The floods have lifted up, O Lord,
the floods have lifted up their voice;
the floods lift up their roaring.
4 More majestic than the thunders of mighty waters,
more majestic than the waves* of the sea,
majestic on high is the Lord!

5 Your decrees are very sure;
holiness befits your house,
O Lord, for evermore.

Sorry I am a bit late today. Here are some stories that don't seem to go together, but, as always, have a way of wrapping up at the end:

1. Open Mike Night: For nearly twelve years, a local restaurant has featured "Open Mike Night" every Tuesday. It was originally hosted by Jackson, who has gone on to be a National Reggae/Rock Act, and so the mantle has been passed to Scotty, a widower raising two teenagers. Lest you think he has enough on his plate already, one of the Teens is Autistic, and can be a handful. About 11 years ago, when his wife was first diagnosed with cancer, Scotty taught himself guitar, mostly as a distraction. He started to go to Open Mike Night, and met my Brother-In-Law Don, who was an amazing guitar player, but was beginning to show symptoms of Early Onset Alzheimer's. Don took Scotty under his wing and encouraged him on guitar. He also played Lead Guitar to Scotty's chord changes, and Scotty became a better guitar player as a result. When I came to Boston seven years ago, I started going to Open Mike Night, and jammed with Scotty and Don. Playing with them made ME a better guitar player too. COVID put the Kibosh on Open Mike Night for a while, but it is back in swing again, and my Sister's ONE NIGHT OUT if and only if she can get someone to stay home with Don, who is in the last stages of that horrible disease.

Scotty's situation has made him very compassionate and open to different kinds of acts, hence, it is an Open Mike like no other:

We have an 85-Year Old Chanteuse who sings Jazz Standards with a Guitar Player, an Autistic youth who plays and sings like Elton John(!), a young woman with DS who belts out Classic Rock, and a Washboard-Type Trio that covers Led Zeppelin. They also have Singer-Songwriters (like me and my sister) who do our own material. Some of it is really GOOD. Some is just karaoke, but it is a Judgement-Free Zone, and we like it that way. Our new "House Lead Guitarist" is my neighbor Thad who is awesome. Everybody asks after Don, as they remember him fondly. That is our little community. And that's why I am late posting today.

2. The Storefront Church: Early in my Christian Walk, I attended a Storefront Church in the City of Boston. Our Pastor was, shall we say, a better Graphic Designer (his profession) than he was a preacher. He had a heavy French Accent, and English was his second language. He welcomed itinerant preachers who were able to preach an awesome sermon. We were a Pentecostal Church, and so we believed in the "Gifts", such as Healing and Prophecy (I still do), but, because we were a young church, and not under any oversight, we had some nutty preachers pass through our doors. Then the pastor would have to spend the next Sunday trying to correct some of the things that had happened the week before. It was unfortunate, but those things happen.

3. Temples and Synagogues: After the Destruction of Solomon's Temple in 587 BC, the Jews were forced into Exile to Babylon. This Exile lasted 70 Years, as predicted by The Prophet Jeremiah. The Temple was gone, and there were no longer any Sacrifices being made, as the Temple was the ONLY place where they were allowed. Nevertheless, the Jews struggled to keep their Religion alive, and gathered together for Worship and Study in places called "Synagogues". A synagogue is not a "Temple". In fact, the Yiddish word for such a place is "shul", which sounds like "school" to English speaking people. Ten Jewish Men was all it took to form a Synagogue, and the establishment of them continued even after Nehemiah built a NEW TEMPLE (later renovated by Herod) where the Daily Sacrifice was resumed. In Capernaum, the ruin of Synagogue is still there, a lovely structure of Greco-Roman Architecture, with distinctively Jewish carvings. Since this ruin dates back to the 1st century, it is likely to be the synagogue spoken of in Today's Reading.

These early synagogues welcomed teachers and preachers who were passing through the town. They were treated as guset-speakers, and appreciated for their insights, as long as they weren't too radical. Both Jesus and later, Paul, spoke in Synagogues as "Guest Preachers", and it was NEVER boring. When Jesus spoke, People were amazed at His Authority. Unlike some modern-day itinerant preachers, Jesus backed up His Authority with genuine Healing and Deliverance.

One thing we notice in Mark is that Jesus performs many of these healings with the admonition to NOT advertise it. He had much work to do before His Death on the Cross, and too much publicity could hinder Him.

But, of course, people couldn't help but announce what was going on? And so, from the very onset, Jesus's preaching and accompanying miracles, became known throughout the area.

Preaching and Teaching are not "Open Mike Night". Discernment is necessary for Church shepherds when inviting people to speak to the flock. However, when a preacher speaks with the Authority of The Word of God, as Jesus and Paul did, and the results are the edification of the church, with Salvation, Healing, and Spiritual Growth taking place, then it's awesome to have a Guest Speaker, with no "Cleanup on Aisle 3" necessary.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen
