And Putin is directing his propaganda to them because he knows they swallow it hook line and sinker.

A friend with a lot of background on Russia says they are weak because Putin has eliminated any possible opposition and they have no leaders to call on. He’s even throwing his own cronies off balconies if they imply any criticism.
Your description of the ethnic situation in Ukraine is utterly false. Every ethnographic study for the past 150 years has shown that every oblast in Ukraine, except for Crimea, has always had a majority ethnic Ukrainian population, not Russian. This includes Donetsk and Luhansk. The ethnic Russian majority in Crimea only dates from after WW2 when Stalin deported the Tartar majority to the interior of Russia.

When last checked there were 6 million Russians in Ukraine in Eastern Ukraine areas.

That’s out of a total population for Ukraine of 48 million. Ethnic Ukrainians are the majority in both Luhansk and Donetsk.Ethnic Russians are only 39% of the population of Luhansk and 38% of Donetsk.
The Russian minority is even smaller in the rest of the so-called “Novorossiya”:

— Kherson Oblast: 14%
— Mykolaiv Oblast: 14%
