Archbishop Gänswein has claimed that the late Pope Benedict XVI disapproved of Pope Francis' restrictions on the traditional Mass.

VATICAN CITY (LifeSiteNews) –– Pope Benedict XVI’s longtime secretary has revealed that the late Pontiff only learned of Pope Francis’ attack on the traditional Mass by reading about it in the Vatican’s newspaper, and that Benedict thought the measures were a “mistake.”

Archbishop Georg Gänswein, the former aide and secretary of the late Benedict XVI, has made the claim in his upcoming book Nothing but the Truth: My Life with Benedict XVI. Due to be published January 12, LifeSiteNews has obtained a copy of the book, which provides inside details of the workings of Benedict’s life after his shock resignation and the pontificate of Pope Francis.

Of particular note are Gänswein’s revelations about the implementation of Pope Francis’ July 16, 2021 restrictions on the traditional Mass, or the Latin Mass, as it is commonly known. According to Gänswein, Benedict was not warned about the motu proprio, which “abrogated” his own 2007 document Summorum Pontificum (SP) which described the Novus Ordo as the “ordinary expression” of the lex orandi, with the rite of 1962 (Latin Mass) being “never abrogated,” and “an extraordinary form.”

Gänswein writes:

On July 16, 2021, Benedict XVI discovered, while flipping through “L’Osservatore Romano” that afternoon, that Pope Francis had released the motu proprio Traditionis custodes on the use of the Roman liturgy prior to the 1970 reform. The subject matter was identical to that of the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum, which he had promulgated on July 7, 2007, and the mode of communication was also the same, through the accompaniment of a letter to illustrate the contents of the new text. Therefore, the Pope emeritus read the document carefully, to understand its motivation and the details......

By abdicating, he allowed it to happen. Benedict could have saved the world from this chastisement

The Latin Mass will long outlast the most recent Pope who is not Catholic.

Maybe the chastisement will bring us benefits. But it won’t be easy.

Benedict, according to some sources now, thought he had only about a year left and he didn’t want to linger incapacitated the way JPII had, since a long papal illness essentially left the Church without anyone in charge until the death of the pope. And he thought it was pretty much a sure thing that Cdl Scola would be elected…which he was, and was already being dressed to come out on the balcony when news came in that they had had another vote because a blank vote had mysteriously turned up in the voting that elected Scola. They threw out the results, called another vote and Bergoglio was elected.

Left-wing election fraud of the first order. Francis was obviously a trend-setter.

I think Ganswein mentions in his book the BXVI thought that he was ill and not going to live much longer, and the other info re Scola was mentioned in reports at the time. If you search on Cardinal Scola, you’ll find a lot of articles from the time of the event.

Doesn’t he also say/write that Benedict XVI considered Francis the pope (ie. he really resigned)?
