Chapter 9*

And he said to them, “I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power.”

After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.

Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)

Then a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and a voice came from the cloud: “THIS IS MY SON, WHOM I LOVE. LISTEN TO HIM!”

Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.

As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” meant.

And they asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected? But I tell you, Elijah has come, and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.”

PETER’S EYEWITNESS TESTIMONY (2 Peter 1)

We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “THIS IS MY SON, WHOM I LOVE; WITH HIM I AM WELL PLEASED.” We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.

I have always taken that to mean one of the Apostles, John historically, is still alive on Earth at this very moment.............

Seems quite a stretch, Red. I’ve always inferred it refers to the three (”some”, not “one”) who were present at the transfiguration.

Possibly so, there could be more than one.

The Apostles themselves wondered about it in John 21:22.........

It would also make sense if they were the two ‘Witnesses’ of Revelation...........

The transfiguration itself was the fulfillment: Jesus appeared in power.

All beautiful but the one that impressed me the most is Raphael at #13. It is a stunning painting, on a grandiose scale. It includes, on the lower level, the miracle of the possessed boy, healed by Christ upon his return among the people. Christ is seen in a glory of light and clouds above his dazzled disciples. On the scene below, some of the people are pointing to Christ, linking the two themes together. This was the last painting of Raphael before his death. The 16thy c. Vasari considered this painting as “the most famous, the most beautiful, the most divine”.

Well said, Mary-Lou. Capturing what Jesus’ appearance became is well beyond our human powers of description and depiction.

That’s better, Alba! I always consider Bloch’s paintings to be noteworthy for their clarity, so I was unhappy in settling for such a blurry one.

Bloch was a remarkable painter. His Sermon on the Mount has always been my favorite.

Raphael’s is the most famous and is located in the Vatican museum. Number 26 is interesting as it makes me think of the pillar of fire that led the Israelites out of Egypt and the 40 years in the wilderness.

The painting you posted here (post #9) follows the biblical description closely; maybe the event looked just like this!

I have a question for you; were there many famous female painters of the Renaissance?
