[T]o say one venerates is to say one worships.Horse hockey. From Cassell’s:
veneror -ari, dep. (act. venero -are: PL.).Note that the secondary translation worship appears before the English spelling for honour. Worship is listed here in its Middle English sense of ‘dignity,’ ‘honor’ or ‘reputation’ (related to the word ‘worth’).
(1) to ask reverently, beseech with awe: nil horum veneror, Hor.; with ut or ne and subj.: Pl.
(2) to revere, respect, worship, honour: deos sancte, Cic.: Larem farre pío, Verg.: secundum deos nomen Romanum, Liv.: Augustum, Hor.: perf. partic. in pass. sense: Verg., Hor.
Catholics don't worship Mary. But if you don't venerate Mary as Jesus Christ's Mother, you are disrespecting Her.
What I witness is worship.
Carry on.
May God remove the scales from your eyes.
You do realize that the reference to graven images and bowing down in Exodus 20 is part of the First Commandment prohibition against idolatry and not a separate commandment (yes, I know that Protestants incorrectly count it as a separate commandment) against graven images per se. God himself commanded that graven images were to be placed above the arc. He also commanded the creation of the graven bronze serpent. Jesus did not condemn anyone when presented a coin with the image of Caesar. Thus, outside of the context of idolatry—and Catholics do not worship Mary as a god—there is no violation of the commandment.
Why are you changing the subject. Did I tell you who you could or could not worship?
I pointed out that your actions violate the second commandment. If you do recognize that as worship after all, then that is a tacit admission on your part at we are correct.
If you don’t want to be accused of worshipping Mary, then don’t violate the second commandment. Either don’t make carved or graven images of people and bow down before them in servitude and prayer, or destroy them and pray to the Father only as Jesus taught us in the Lord’s prayer.
Otherwise, you will be called out for doing what is visibly obvious that you are doing.
PWND
The Latin veneror has a broader meaning than just "worship." An additional meaning listed in Lewis and Short, A Latin Dictionary, is:
With men or things as objects, to revere, do homage to, reverence, honor. There is even a Catholic saint who is called the Venerable Bede, who is clearly not worshipped as a god.
Pray tell, do you not realize that you pray to someone anytime that you ask for a favor?
BWAHAHAHA!!!!
See post #19 by ebb tide….QUOTE (copied and pasted) “ Well if, you and others, can tell me and fellow catholics whom we worship; I can tell y’all that you worship Lucifer. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.” UNQUOTE
Welcome to Daniel’s Club.
Did someone post this hoping to get everyone riled up going into a long weekend?
The short answer is, “Who cares?” Catholics can do what they want. Mormons can do what they want. Even Baptists can do whatever their wives tell them to do.
Some folks on this site are so stuck in their own dogma, they argue over what someone practicing another religion does for their God. I expect that from some religions—but not from Christians.
So you admit it?
Not true. I can also mean to offer respect.
Exactly. Catholics have great respect for the Blessed Mother. But, we do not worship her as God.
And what he will still see is people bowing down before carved or graven images, which is a clear violation of one of the Ten Commandments.
Lol!!
(I hope non-Baptists are allowed to laugh at that!)
😉
Merry Christmas!🎄
OK, first one or second one. It doesn’t make any difference.
Bowing down before a statue STILL violates a clear, concise, unequivocal command of God.
No, just pointing out you hypocrisy of your claim that you are not telling people who they worship when you did so upthread.
