Despite being hailed as Europe’s poster child of green energy, Denmark saw a fivefold year-on-year jump in energy prices earlier this year and was forced to act accordingly, including lowering the heating in public buildings throughout the country and asking Danes to turn down the heat in their homes.
Churches around Denmark have been forced to cancel services because of the ongoing energy crisis. In the Diocese of Lolland-Falster, all 108 churches have been given permission to move or cancel services to conserve energy, and many have already made use of this arrangement, especially in the sparsely populated countryside.
“It costs a lot of money to heat an old medieval church with electricity,” Bishop Marianne Gaarden told Danish media.
Similar decisions have been made in the dioceses of Aarhus and Viborg, each of which comprises hundreds of churches although church authorities have promised that transport will be arranged for churchgoers who find that they have to travel further to get to a church which is still functioning.

That’s messed up. You don’t need energy/power to worship god.
This sounds like an excuse.
Electricity was way cheaper in the medieval era.
It’s only November.
Damn inflation.
Yeah, I see their point. This church is better off without electricity.
It doesn’t have God, anyway.
That tells us all we need to know :/
Closing the churches will inconvenience very few Danes.
The Darkness descends on Europe and they cancel prayer.
Years ago, a church in Illinois lost their heating system. As a result, the organ sounded HORRIBLE. It didn’t take long for the choirs to find alternative instruments that weren’t affected by the cold. The problem affected only two Sundays, as the heating system was replaced.
Many years ago I attended Sunday mass at the cathedral in Strasbourg, France. It was January and a cold morning. I was surprised to see members of the choir wearing wool scarves and winter coats while they sang. Heating those old cathedrals would be nearly impossible.
But the bars are still open.
They need a HUGE revival there.
So use more gas instead. Gotcha.
Did they stop to think about heating those old churches with wood stoves?
I grew up in a small church in a rural area of California that had a wood stove in the back of the church as the only source of heating.
Probably true.
They’re dedicated.
Wood stoves can be highly effective.
