The way Eucharists are prepared and presided over needs to change, San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone told CatholicNewsAgency.com (November 20). For instance, the faithful should go to confession more often and be better prepared to receive Communion respectfully.
Cordileone's assessment of the situation is damning, “Never has Communion been treated so casually, in any of the Apostolic Churches, in any of the Eastern Rites, or in the West."
Asked if the "only way" to receive Communion properly and respectfully was to receive it - instead of pushing it into the mouth with the hand - Cordileone replied, “I wonder the same thing.”
"It's a lot more challenging to preserve reverence for the Eucharist when it's given in the hands,” he explains what is obvious. On Mondays, priests find hosts on the floor, under the pews, or between the pages of the hymnals. As a pastor, Cordileone used ushers next to the priest to make sure people did not run off with the host.
Recalling that the faithful used to fast from midnight, before receiving Communion on their knees, he concludes that we need to take "some kind" of practical measures to remind people who they are welcoming when they receive Communion.

But, at least all those pseudo-Catholics in the N.O. are “canonically regular.” /sarcasm
