Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 12

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

12 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. 2 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.”

3 He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4 He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. 5 Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath and yet are innocent? 6 I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. 7 If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’[a] you would not have condemned the innocent. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

9 Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, 10 and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to bring charges against Jesus, they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”

11 He said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”

13 Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.

I have shared this story before, but we have some new Prayer Warriors on the Thread, and the story goes well with Today's Reading.

Right after the Saturday Morning Service, Abie and the other elderly gentlemen who had made up the Minyan had gathered in the Community Room of the old synagogue to have some coffee and bagels. Abie had prepared a bagel for himself with a big schmear of cream cheese, when he noticed the even older president of the synagogue, sitting all by himself on the other side of the room. Abie, being more able-bodied than the elderly president, brought the bagel and a cup of coffee to the old man, carrying it across the room to do so. Upon receiving the coffee and the bagel, the older man loudly berated Abie for carrying the plate and cup across the room on the Sabbath!

When Abie, who was my Father-In-Law, shared this with me, I was incensed! I quoted Scripture, cited Today's Gospel Story, and was a genuine "scold" about it. I wanted to march down to the synagogue and give the president a piece of my mind.

Abie just shrugged his shoulders and spread out his hands.

"Nu? What can you do? The man is 'Abibotel'" (senile)

One of the Big Ten of God's Commandments is to keep the Sabbath HOLY. The word "Holy" is a precious and specific word meaning "Sacred, Set-apart, Hallowed, Pure, and a host of other things, but it does NOT mean "Self-Righteous, Judgmental, or Sanctimonious". Former President Trump got into a bit of hot water the other day when he used the term "Sanctimonious" towards an essential ally. It was a quickly corrected mistake, and all seems well between the two men now, but the howl that went up among fans of both gentlemen was so reminiscent of the Pharisees finding fault with every little thing that it reminded me of the Abibotel Synagogue President and Able-Bodied Abie. When the Outrage surpasses the Offense, it becomes "Sanctimonious".

But, looking back at the Story, I was being pretty Sanctimonious about it too!I was so outraged by Abibotel's Behavior towards Able-Bodied Abie, my beloved F-I-L, that I was quoting Scripture out of context, and being a bigger jerk than all of them put together.

A Good Deed or an Act of Kindness is NEVER inappropriate!

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen
