Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 11

Jesus and John the Baptist

11 After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.[a]

2 When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples 3 to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”

4 Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[b] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. 6 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”

7 As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. 9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written:

“‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,
    who will prepare your way before you.’[c]

11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,[d] and violent people have been raiding it. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. 14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come. 15 Whoever has ears, let them hear.

16 “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:

17  “‘We played the pipe for you,
    and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
    and you did not mourn.’

18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”

God of Our Fathers,

You are the Same

Yesterday, Today, and Forever.

You Guided Our Forefathers

And Led them to Found This Marvelous Country.

You inspired generations of people yearning to be free

To travel across treacherous oceans to start a new life here.

You kept us during civil war, foreign wars, depression, recession, polarization, and scandal

You have always been with us, for those who have eyes to see You and ears to hear You

We Know that you are With us.

We pray for Our fellow Americans in the paths of vicious storms and fires.

We pray for the safety and integrity in the upcoming Midterm Elections. We pray for the Repentance, Restoration, and Renewal of Our Beloved Nation.




Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

Back in the 90's, I was driving the big truck full of band Equipment down the Old Cape Highway to set up for the evening's concert. We were to perform for the Youth Group at a Congregational Church that was described to me as a "Typical White New England-Style Church with a Steeple" located on Main Street. Since we usually played at more "Pentecostal-Style" Churches, this gig was going to be a bit of a stretch for the Band, but we were always willing to go where we were sent.

I saw it up ahead. There was a "Typical White New England-Style Church with a Steeple" right smack in the middle of a fork in the road. As I neared the church, I spied one of those Church Bulletin Boards posted outside. In huge letters were posted this cringe-worthy message:

FAITH AND DOUBT
BOTH ARE NEEDED.

YIKES! Was that the philosophy of the church where we were booked? Ours was a very Faith-Based Ministry. To be philosophically opposed to our host (and employer!) was going to be a tough gig. Then I saw the rest of the Bulletin Board. It was a Unitarian Church. Not the church I was looking for. Then I saw a smaller"Typical White New England-Style Church with a Steeple" nestled behind the Unitarian Church. THAT one was a Congregational Church. The two churches shared a parking lot. We unloaded the truck, set up the system for a six-piece rock band, and played for the Youth Group. The kids loved the music, but we were never asked back. Perhaps the two "Typical White New England-Style Churches with a Steeple" shared more than a parking lot.

Preachers will often seize upon the incident in Today's Reading to justify doubting God. "If John the Baptist had doubts, then YOU CAN TOO!" is their message. They preach that perhaps John was "disappointed" with Jesus because he hadn't manifested Himself as King of Kings and thrown out the Roman Occupiers. They put too much emphasis upon John's moment of doubt.

Others preach that this lapse just shows that John was human. Whatever the reason, we know that:

1. Even as a Pre-Born Fetus, John KNEW Who Jesus was. (Luke 1)

2. When Jesus presents Himself to John to be baptized, John instantly recognizes his own unworthiness to perform the ritual, because he knew that Jesus was sinless.(Matthew 3)

3. When John sees Jesus from afar, he cries out "Behold, the Lamb of God!" (John 1) This shows that John knew that Jesus would be the Atoning Sacrifice for sin. The "Conquering Messiah" part would come much later.

Perhaps we should look at Jesus reaction to John's unhappy moment, rather than trying to analyze John's questioning.

First, Jesus answers John by quoting Scripture that proves His identity as Messiah:

Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[b] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. 6 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”

Then Jesus does a wonderful thing. He DEFENDS John. He is, after all, Our Advocate, and here He is standing up for His beloved cousin:

7 As John's disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. 9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written:

“‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.’[c]

11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,[d] and violent people have been raiding it. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. 14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come. 15 Whoever has ears, let them hear.

Then, Jesus quotes a folksy proverb that roughly translated is "damned if you do, and damned if you don't".

16 “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:

17 “‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not mourn.’

18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”

And so, John received his answer. He didn't need the "doubt" at all.

For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
