Pontifical Academy for Life Appoints Pro-Abortion Atheist Member

Mariana Mazzucato joins a growing list of members who hold views antithetical to the Catholic Church.

VATICAN CITY — The Pontifical Academy for Life has appointed to its list of full members a highly influential atheist economist who supports legalized abortion and whose views on the economy have in part been praised by Pope Francis.

Mariana Mazzucato, who teaches the Economics of Innovation and Public Value at University College London and is a member of the World Economic Forum, was appointed on Saturday by Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, president of the academy, and Msgr. Renzo Pegoraro, its chancellor.

Mazzucato is one of 14 new ordinary members appointed to the academy. Others include Congolese-born Jean Marie Okwo-Bele, former director of the department of Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals of the World Health Organization (2004-2017) and now director on the board of trustees of the International Vaccine Institute; Muslim Mosaad Helaly Saad Al-Din, professor of Islamic jurisprudence at Al-Azhar University; and professor Roberto Dell’Oro, formerly a corresponding academician who serves as director of the Bioethics Institute at Loyola Marymount University.

The pontifical academy under Archbishop Paglia has drawn controversy before for its choice of members. In 2017, it appointed a pro-abortion theologian to its ranks, along with choosing for the first time non-Catholic members.

Shouldn’t atheists be more anti-abortion? After all, they don’t believe in an afterlife?

Once again raising the perennial question “Is the Pope Catholic?”

Why are you so focused on atheists?

They don't fear final judgement or Hell. Therefore, they're more likely to commit mortal sins, including suicide, without remorse.

I see no reason at all why an atheist would be more pro-life than a faithful Catholic.

I am not focused on atheists at all. I only mentioned one thing, based on my experience in the pro-life movement. A lot of people dismiss pro-life arguments, because it is supposedly, "a religious thing." Being against abortion is no more, "a religious thing," than being against murder of theft. Since Catholic who are pro-life are trying to reach a wider audience, it can be beneficial to have a nonbeliever to reach a wider audience.

I see no reason at all why an atheist would be more pro-life than a faithful Catholic.

I never said that.

I’m just saying that I’d rather see the defense of human life by a Christian who can source God, the Bible, the Ten Commandments and the Four Last Things than a person who rejects all of the above.

For an atheist what’s different from his defense of human life than his defense of baby seals or the rain forest?

I have read many defenses of human life by Christians. But if we want to win elections, we have to reach a wider audience. No?

It starts at evangelizing, the whole kit and caboodle.

We need to get the atheists to Heaven; do we not?

Or do we just want to use them as our “tools”?

By the way:

What do elections have to do with Bergoglio's so-called Pontifical Acadamey for Life?

With his cardinal appointments in the U.S., and his own pitiful comment on the Dobb's decision, there's no reason to think this pope is trying to win elections in favor of the unborn.

“I tell you the truth. I don’t understand it (the Dobb's decision) from a technical point of view,” he (the apostate pope) explained, adding, “I have to study it because I don’t really understand (the details of) the ruling 50 years ago and now I can’t say whether it did right or wrong from a judicial point of view.”

Whether the Pope understands, or what he even thinks should happen is one thing. But ostensibly the PAL, it's members, are looking for progress on issues of life.

Why doesn't he just call if the Pontifical Academy on Abortion, or disband it altogether?

Good question.

Bergoglio has fired every single pro-life member of the previous PAL, and has replaced its members with the likes of this monster.
