Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 5

Murder

21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,[a] and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister[b][c] will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’[d] is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.

23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

25 “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.

There has been an increase in what is called "Hate Crime" in our country. That is supposedly a crime that is committed because of some underlying bigotry in the perpetrator. It has come down to the minutia of using an incorrect pronoun when addressing somebody. A "Hate Crime" demands that the Powers-That-Be are able to read the thoughts of the alleged perpetrator. Actually, all real crimes are motivated by some kind of hate, even if the perpetrators just hate themselves. I don't believe there should be any human laws that judge the intent of a person's heart. Assault is assault, rape is rape, and murder is murder no matter what the assailant was thinking at the time.

Today's Reading is where my friend from China found herself struggling with the Sermon on the Mount. She came from a culture that was a synergistic blend of Communist Totalitarianism and Strict Confucian Principles of Family, Honor, and Self-Control. She saw The "Law" as something oppresive, to be avoided whenever possible, but still keeping up the APPEARANCE of compliance. She could not conceive of something being sin by just thinking about it. It was as if this new "religion" had more laws than the previous one.

The words of Jesus confused her even more:

"You have heard it said...but I say..."

What she didn't get, and what probably confused the disciples at the time, was that Jesus wasn't talking about compliance. He was speaking of a total change of heart, a faith that was internal rather than external.

This brings us to the next question. Is mere temptation a sin in and of itself? This folksy proverb can help with that question:

"You can't keep birds from flying over your head,
But you CAN keep them from making a nest in your hair."

Temptation isn't a sin. It is how we react to Temptation that becomes sin if we let it. When the temptation to hate someone lives rent-free in one's head, it will grow and develop until the only thing keeping it from turning into murder are the laws against it and the penalties. We can see the results in places where the law is not enforced. The murder rates rise exponentially.

Murder is still illegal in those places, but without enforcement, people are left to act out the hate in their hearts.

And so, Hate equals Murder if the only thing restraining it is the Law.

Thank God for His Glorious Gift of salvation. We could never be able to do it for ourselves.
