Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 5
The Fulfillment of the Law
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Dear Heavenly Father,
My Deliverer,
We Cry Out To You For Deliverance!
You Are The Only One
Who Can Deliver Us from Evil.
It Surrounds us
Like a pack of Hungry Wolves,
Seeking only to kill, steal, and destroy.
Deliver us from the enemy of our souls, oh LORD!
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

Psalm 64
To the leader. A Psalm of David.
1 Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint;
preserve my life from the dread enemy.
2 Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked,
from the scheming of evildoers,
3 who whet their tongues like swords,
who aim bitter words like arrows,
4 shooting from ambush at the blameless;
they shoot suddenly and without fear.
5 They hold fast to their evil purpose;
they talk of laying snares secretly,
thinking, ‘Who can see us?*
6 Who can search out our crimes?*
We have thought out a cunningly conceived plot.’
For the human heart and mind are deep.
7 But God will shoot his arrow at them;
they will be wounded suddenly.
8 Because of their tongue he will bring them to ruin;*
all who see them will shake with horror.
9 Then everyone will fear;
they will tell what God has brought about,
and ponder what he has done.
10 Let the righteous rejoice in the Lord
and take refuge in him.
Let all the upright in heart glory.

Just yesterday, I was waxing rhapsodic about the Eric Clapton Concert to one of my musician acquaintances. In a totally unanticipated response to my glowing review, the musician sneered:
"Oh. Did he go into one of his political rants?"
I was stunned. The concert had been seamless, all music, and totally heartfelt. I told the guy so and that was that.
Nevertheless, I was curious about the guy's remark. Where had THAT come from? And so, when I got home, I looked it up. It seems that, maybe 30 years ago, Eric Clapton had interrupted the flow of the music to rant about immigration in his beloved UK. He was roundly chastised for this at the time and called a racist. But it was a long time ago. Of course, Roger Waters of Pink Floyd is always shooting his mouth off, to this very day, with antisemitic rants, and Barbra Streisand has been known to have wasted 40 minutes of her show to say how much she hated George Bush, but that doesn't seem to bother liberals in the least. Stand-up Comics, whose entire schtick is based upon "The Rant" have had to cancel whole tours because of "Political Correctness", which masquerades as RIGHTEOUSNESS. Entertainers can correct their current behavior, but they can't do anything about what they did or said in the past, no matter how much they grovel or apologize.
Maintaining Righteousness is hard work. Even maintaining the "Appearance of Righteousness" is nearly impossible. It becomes even harder when society keeps changing the rules and moving the goal posts. What was perfectly acceptable behavior a generation ago will land you in prison today. People are being help responsible for things they said decades ago.
Today's Reading is a Turning Point in The Sermon on the Mount. The Beatitudes are lovely and poetic, like music. Words of Blessing for the Meek, the Poor in Spirit, the Mourners, The Peacemakers, and the Persecuted give comfort and peace to our souls.
But then the tone changes. Jesus starts talking about The Law. God does not move the goalposts. Jesus did not come to nullify the Law, but to fulfill it. But the Law is still the Law. Not even the bits of punctuation are altered.
Just as a Comedian may change his schtick to comply with "Political Correctness", people can comply with the Law on the outside but still resent it inwardly. That may work in society, but not Spiritually. In fact, Religious Compliance with the rules and regulations of a sect may give an Appearance of Righteousness, but hides a corrupt soul.
No one can be perfectly Righteous, because the more one conforms and complies, the more the inner man struggles with resentment. To deal with this struggle, more laws and regulations have to be enacted in order to keep the Originals. Paul, in Romans 7, graphically compares this struggle to having a rotting corpse strapped to his back. Because of our sinful nature, there is no way any of us can be truly Righteous, inside and out. The Sermon on the Mount exposes this inner failure that we all have. It takes the ONE Truly Righteous Man to remedy this, and His Name is Jesus.
Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)
God Bless America.
Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.
