Salt and Light

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Lord and Heavenly Father

You Are The LORD that Sanctifies Us.

You are The One Who Makes us Holy.

You Are The One Who Sets us Apart from the World.

Though This Sanctification is an Unbelievable Honor,

It is also a Great Burden.

When the peoples of the world see this sanctification, they hate us for it.

Let us always remember that our Battle is not with flesh-and-blood enemies,

But with the Powers and Principalities and the rulers of dark places.

These entities hate what is good, because they are evil.

And yet, we are not good either, but derive our holiness from YOU, and You Alone.




Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.

Mom had a stroke when she was only 39 years old. Thank God she recovered from it in record time, but during her rehabilitation, I took care of my five younger siblings. I was nearly 14, so I felt quite "mature", enough to take on the resposibility as best as I could. But it was traumatic at the time. (I actually saw the stroke as it happened, and Mom falling to the floor in her bedroom.) Mom later testified that she spoke to God while she was in recovery, and, to this day, we credit her rapid healing to a Miracle.

Since the stroke was due to High Blood Pressure, the Doctor put Mom on the most draconian Salt-Free Diet that could possiblly exist. Dad was the kind of guy who liked to sprinkle salt on his corned beef sandwich, and liked weird Navy recipes like Finnan Haddie, Beans with Salt Pork, and Creamed Chipped Beef on Toast (also known as "S.O.S" 'Stuff' on a Shingle). The Salt Shaker disappeared from our table and was replaced by a chemical "salt-substitute" which was probably worse for us than salt was. There was also an herbal mix that was supposed to provide a savory alternative to salt, but Dad said it looked and tasted like lawn clippings. And so our family went through a long Salt-Free period.

Like I said, Mom recovered in record time. However, Salt was still the boogieman for years after the stroke. Mom continued to cook Irish-American 'Cuisine' for eight or more people every day, but without salt or even the "lawn-clippings" to spice it up. But, since ketchup contains lots of salt, we all slathered it on everything to make it palatable. We used to call ketchup "Irish Spaghetti Sauce."

Is it any wonder that I am now what some people call a "Foodie", enjoying spicy cuisines from all over the world? My favorites are Northern Chinese, Japanese, Middle Eastern, Caribbean, and Mexican, all spicy, savory, and VERY salty.

A fellow FReeper was doing home-care for his elderly Mom, and fed her a very controlled diet. She got extremely sick and had to be rushed to the hospital. The doctor determined that her downturn had to do with the LACK of salt in her diet. They gave her a saline IV and she recovered. Too much salt isn't good, but not enough is not good either.

One of the original pilots for Star Trek TOS concerned a creature that sucked all of the salt out of her victim's body. Dr. McCoy almost was killed by the creature. Captain Kirk suspected the alien when he saw her lusting after the salt shaker as Dr. McCoy sprinkled it onto his food. Salt is a big part of our chemical make-up, and we can't live without it.

Salt also preserves food and keeps decomposing bacteria in check. Meats, fish, poultry, and other foods will spoil quickly without refrigeration, and salt is the product that keeps that from happening. Roman soldiers were given salt to preserve their food while they were on the march, since an "army travels on its stomach". In fact, these regular distributions were called their "salary", which is from the Latin word for salt.

When Jesus linked Salt and Light, He spoke of two essentials in Life. Light is necessary for plants to grow, and the oceans team with life that live in a salty environment. Both Salt and Light are disinfectants, and keep corruption at bay. When Jesus calls you and me "Salt and Light", He is giving us a mission. We are to be a cleansing influence, a spice that makes life savory and interesting, and a preservative for what is good.
