23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. 24 News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed; and he healed them. 25 Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis,[g] Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.

and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

I wasn't sure what I would be writing this morning, but during my Bible search for today's lesson, my eyes wandered to a pop-up ad running alongside today's Scripture portion. It was for an app for dieting, based upon one's sign of the Zodiac. For each sign, the usual constellation (Taurus, Virgo, or whatever) was replaced by drawings of nude female forms in suggestive poses. Whoever had designed the ad must have thought that overweight people seeing this would instantly respond, and use their birth sign to end up looking like those pictures. It wasn't pornographic, but it sure was inappropriate juxtaposed with Today's Lesson!

I pressed the abuse button and was connected to that search engine that I NEVER use (begins with G and rhymes wit bugle). The blurb said "We chose this ad for YOU PERSONALLY because of your searches". REALLY? First of all, I never use that search engine, and second of all, I base my health decisions on making sensible food choices, moderation, and getting plenty of exercise. How could this ad have been chosen for me?

I flagged the ad as "inappropriate for the site" and moved on.

Most of TV commercials are for Prescription Medicines, and ninety percent of the junk email I get has to do with health. "This One Simple Trick Will Cure Your Diabetes! or "Why Doctors are Surpressing This Neat Trick to Get Rid of Toenail Fungus!" fill my inbox every day. Even on Talk Radio, the ads are for supplements and patent medicines for both you and your DOG.

This overt concern about health and wellness invades every aspect of our lives. The Powers-That-Be were even able to use this obsession with health to subvert an election and destroy our nation's economy. Here in Massachusetts, where marijuana is legal but heavily regulated, cannabis is sold in special dispensaries that call themselves "Health and Wellness" centers. So it would seem that, in a state which once boasted the best medical care in the World, it is now more important to FEEL healthy rather than to BE healthy.

Tippy and I maintain our physical and mental health by walking a mile and a half to a local pond, sit and pray as we watch the Sunrise, and walk the mile and a half back. Only then does our day begin.

In Jesus's day, people were also concerned about their health and wellness. However, most people were too busy making a living to take leisurely, prayerful walks, or order supplements online, or fast according to their astrological sign. There were no fad diets, but the Torah forbade certain foods and had some rules of basic hygiene that helped maintain public health. There were doctors, usually trained in the Greek practice of medicine, like the Evangelist Luke, the Beloved Physician. People still got sick, lepers were quarantined, and people with lifelong disabilities were often reduced to begging. Jesus was not against the medical profession, as He said "The sick need a physician." But, as even today, there are some conditions even the physician can't handle. People who suffered from these afflictions flocked to Jesus and He healed them all.Even without modern communications, word about Jesus spread throughout the region. He was healing people whom society had abandoned to their fate. The Medical Profession had written off these people as beyond hope. These people were not seeking to have clearer skin or lose a few pounds. They were SICK.

Right here on this site, we pray for sick people every day. Sometimes they get better, and sometimes they do not. I will not indulge in any glib answers as to why this happens. Others may do so, saying my faith isn't strong enough, or I am not praying correctly, or whatever. But those are not satisfactory answers. I will just have to state honestly that I don't know why some people are healed and some are not. All I try to do is keep the faith and maintain my balance in life (oops...did I say that? My birthday is in OCTOBER!:-)
