A man who taught Sunday school at a North Carolina church was convicted Monday of rape and other sexual crimes, a prosecutor said.
Johnston County Assistant District Attorney Paul Jackson said in a news release Tuesday that the charges against Jonathan David Young, 38, involved three children and took place from 2003 to 2014, The News & Observer reported.
Many of the offenses happened at Firstborn Baptist Church in Benson where Young was a Sunday school teacher for several years, the release stated. The youngest victim was 5 and the oldest was 14 when the incidents occurred, Jackson told the newspaper.
Young was convicted of rape, sex offense and taking indecent liberties with children and sentenced to a minimum of 87 years to a maximum of 109 years in prison, according to the release.

At the church? How did he get away with that? Must have been a large building.
Why there HAS to be windows in ALL Sunday School room doors and always at least two unrelated people with kids at all times. I tried to tell my church that and they would not listen. Our insurance company even requires such.
He looks somewhat like my insurance agent.

Apparently the church leaders were aware of what was happening with these girls so they should be arrested as well as I see it. They apparently refused to do anything.
A church I attended when my kids were in their early teens had an assistent youth Pastor who was having sex with his 13 yr. old babysitter. Once that was known and confirmed the leadership contacted the authorities and he was arrested.
These happenings must be addressed and not ignored by the leadership.
BTW - He is a child ‘predator’.....seeking who he may devour!

Apparently the charge of ‘rape’ indicated much more than “touching”.......he should be shot.
This fellow must have lived in Benson a long while. What did he do for a living. The First Baptist Church in a small city such as Benson is a pretty big part of the culture of the town. He did the acts, no doubt, what is the story he could get away so long. Was he someone with community clouts nephew or even cousin? This story is incomplete. I suspect some sort of coverup by people who will now deny everything.
As I note below, this man had some sort juice in the town. The former sheriff of this parish was a well known bi-sexual molester and it went on for years. His family is not as powerful as it once was and he lost an election so his replacement who hated him went on crusade and now he is in prison supposedly for life. I would not bet on, as a number of the older families here are quietly working to get his sentence shortened and the ex=sheriff be made a senior trustee at the big state pen. He if this guy can ever rise from the political dead there will be blood, as is said.
Our church listened and cut windows in all of the doors (except the bathrooms)many years ago. Even the office door. We also require two individuals on our church van.
