Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Exodus 12

The Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread

12 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt, 2 “This month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year. 3 Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb[a] for his family, one for each household. 4 If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbor, having taken into account the number of people there are. You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat. 5 The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats. 6 Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the members of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight. 7 Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs. 8 That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. 9 Do not eat the meat raw or boiled in water, but roast it over a fire—with the head, legs and internal organs. 10 Do not leave any of it till morning; if some is left till morning, you must burn it. 11 This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover.

12 “On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord. 13 The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.

14 “This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord—a lasting ordinance. 15 For seven days you are to eat bread made without yeast. On the first day remove the yeast from your houses, for whoever eats anything with yeast in it from the first day through the seventh must be cut off from Israel. 16 On the first day hold a sacred assembly, and another one on the seventh day. Do no work at all on these days, except to prepare food for everyone to eat; that is all you may do.

17 “Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread, because it was on this very day that I brought your divisions out of Egypt. Celebrate this day as a lasting ordinance for the generations to come. 18 In the first month you are to eat bread made without yeast, from the evening of the fourteenth day until the evening of the twenty-first day. 19 For seven days no yeast is to be found in your houses. And anyone, whether foreigner or native-born, who eats anything with yeast in it must be cut off from the community of Israel. 20 Eat nothing made with yeast. Wherever you live, you must eat unleavened bread.”

21 Then Moses summoned all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Go at once and select the animals for your families and slaughter the Passover lamb. 22 Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin and put some of the blood on the top and on both sides of the doorframe. None of you shall go out of the door of your house until morning. 23 When the Lord goes through the land to strike down the Egyptians, he will see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe and will pass over that doorway, and he will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down.

24 “Obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance for you and your descendants. 25 When you enter the land that the Lord will give you as he promised, observe this ceremony. 26 And when your children ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’ 27 then tell them, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the Lord, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.’” Then the people bowed down and worshiped. 28 The Israelites did just what the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron.

29 At midnight the Lord struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on the throne, to the firstborn of the prisoner, who was in the dungeon, and the firstborn of all the livestock as well. 30 Pharaoh and all his officials and all the Egyptians got up during the night, and there was loud wailing in Egypt, for there was not a house without someone dead.

A half-century ago, the City of Boston was divided by an elevated highway that sliced right through the Business District. Whole sections of the City were in the shadow of this hulking Behemoth, and plans were made to engineer a solution that would sink the highway underground, construct an alternate Cable-Stay Bridge over the Charles River, and dig a New Tunnel(Named after Ted Williams, the Boston Red Sox Hero), to the Airport. Years went into the planning, and even more into the construction, which came to be known as "The Big Dig". At the first breaking of the ground for the immense project, a horrible plague of rats was unleashed upon the city, due to their habitat being disturbed. Cost Overruns, Shoddy Materials, and Political Corruption also caused delays.

Hubby and I lived in a neighborhood of Boston south of The Big Dig. His parents lived in a town just north of it. This was nearly as difficult as West Germans having relatives in East Berlin. The shortest route to the North Shore was right through the worst part of The Big Dig. It was possible to circumvent the City using the Route 128 Beltway, but that would add an additional FIFTY MILES to the trip. That was ridiculous and out of the question.

There was one other way, but was certain to be congested with commuters leaving the City at the end of the workday who were also avoiding The Big Dig. That was Storrow Drive. (We dubbed it "Sorrow Drive"), a scenic, two lane road that ran along the banks of the Charles River. There were two access points to be negotiated, one by Fenway Park, and the other an Antiquated Traffic Circle that fed onto the Mystic River Bridge on one lane, the Big Dig on another, and the famous Mass General Hospital right in front. (Leverett Circle).

Passover was a little late that year, and coincided with the Red Sox Opening Day at Fenway Park. There was also something going on at Boston Garden, which was situated near Leverett Circle. It was a Workday, which meant that the office workers were lining up to go home. Thank Goodness there wasn't a Concert at The Esplanade, or Storrow Drive would have been closed too. It was the First Night of Passover, and we were on our way to my In-Laws for the Annual Seder Meal.

The first choke point was Kenmore Square, the location of Fenway Park. I don't know whether the Sox won or lost that day, but the mobs of people exiting Fenway did not look happy. Parking lots and garages began to disgorge hordes of cars, adding to the traffic which inched along. Every few seconds, we had to stop and allow large groups of people to jaywalk across the street. We finally reached the on ramp to Storrow Drive, and, even though there were no more pedestrians, the traffic was even worse. At Leverett Circle, the Traffic came to a total standstill. Then, an Ambulance had to come through to get to Mass General Hospital, right in front of us. The cars jostled to make way for the Ambulance, and then closed in after it like floodwaters. It was a nightmare.

After a trip of sixteen miles that took two and a half hours to negotiate, we arrived at our destination. My M-I-L had held up dinner for us, and, since I was the youngest, I opened the Seder with the question: Mah-nish-ta-na halayla hazer..." meaning:

"Why is this night different from all other nights?"

I could have answered: "Because it's a Workday, in the City of Boston, with an antiquated highway system, with a project that is so fraught with poor-planning and corruption that it's taking forever, that it's Opening Day at Fenway, and there's an Event at The GAHden, and, yeah, by the way, it's PASSOVER!"

The First Passover in Egypt made my experience look like a picnic. Here were People who had endured 400 years of oppression, and had just seen the surrounding country devastated by Plagues. Nature, Religion, Politics, and People's own bodies had turned against them. Starvation, Disease, Filth, and Corruption were on every side. And, they were being asked to believe that the God of Abraham (who hadn't spoken to them in 400 years) was going to Deliver them...according to this man Moses and his brother Aaron.

That took Faith. Now this God was asking them to do some crazy stuff with Blood, and Bread, and Bitter Herbs. Disobedience would mean the death of the Firstborn.

And so, Why was this night different from all other nights?

Because it's the Eve of the Day of Deliverence.

By the way, I have tickets to see Eric Clapton at the Boston GAHden next month. Since the Big Dig, I don't know my way around the City anymore. My Sister has graciously volunteered to do the driving!

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

The Big Dig is finished now.

The Ted Williams Tunnel makes it infinitely easier to get to Logan Airport.

The Zakem Brigde is so beautiful that it has become a symbol of Boston. And there’s one just like it in, of all places, Jerusalem.

Leverett Circle has been replaced by a modern interchange. The High Rise Apartments are still there though, across from Mass General, with a billboard that says:

“IF YOU LIVED HERE,
YOU’D BE HOME NOW.”

There’s still a lot of Traffic on Storrow Drive, in spite of the improvements. :-)

Amen !!! <><

Psalm 69

To the leader: according to Lilies. Of David.

1 Save me, O God,
for the waters have come up to my neck.
2 I sink in deep mire,
where there is no foothold;
I have come into deep waters,
and the flood sweeps over me.
3 I am weary with my crying;
my throat is parched.
My eyes grow dim
with waiting for my God.

4 More in number than the hairs of my head
are those who hate me without cause;
many are those who would destroy me,
my enemies who accuse me falsely.
What I did not steal
must I now restore?
5 O God, you know my folly;
the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you.

6 Do not let those who hope in you be put to shame because of me,
O Lord God of hosts;
do not let those who seek you be dishonoured because of me,
O God of Israel.
7 It is for your sake that I have borne reproach,
that shame has covered my face.
8 I have become a stranger to my kindred,
an alien to my mother’s children.

9 It is zeal for your house that has consumed me;
the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.
10 When I humbled my soul with fasting,*
they insulted me for doing so.
11 When I made sackcloth my clothing,
I became a byword to them.
12 I am the subject of gossip for those who sit in the gate,
and the drunkards make songs about me.

13 But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord.
At an acceptable time, O God,
in the abundance of your steadfast love, answer me.
With your faithful help 14rescue me
from sinking in the mire;
let me be delivered from my enemies
and from the deep waters.
15 Do not let the flood sweep over me,
or the deep swallow me up,
or the Pit close its mouth over me.

16 Answer me, O Lord, for your steadfast love is good;
according to your abundant mercy, turn to me.
17 Do not hide your face from your servant,
for I am in distress—make haste to answer me.
18 Draw near to me, redeem me,
set me free because of my enemies.

19 You know the insults I receive,
and my shame and dishonour;
my foes are all known to you.
20 Insults have broken my heart,
so that I am in despair.
I looked for pity, but there was none;
and for comforters, but I found none.
21 They gave me poison for food,
and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.

22 Let their table be a trap for them,
a snare for their allies.
23 Let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see,
and make their loins tremble continually.
24 Pour out your indignation upon them,
and let your burning anger overtake them.
25 May their camp be a desolation;
let no one live in their tents.
26 For they persecute those whom you have struck down,
and those whom you have wounded, they attack still more.*
27 Add guilt to their guilt;
may they have no acquittal from you.
28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living;
let them not be enrolled among the righteous.
29 But I am lowly and in pain;
let your salvation, O God, protect me.

30 I will praise the name of God with a song;
I will magnify him with thanksgiving.
31 This will please the Lord more than an ox
or a bull with horns and hoofs.
32 Let the oppressed see it and be glad;
you who seek God, let your hearts revive.
33 For the Lord hears the needy,
and does not despise his own that are in bonds.

34 Let heaven and earth praise him,
the seas and everything that moves in them.
35 For God will save Zion
and rebuild the cities of Judah;
and his servants shall live* there and possess it;
36 the children of his servants shall inherit it,
and those who love his name shall live in it.

The Big Dig sounds like the Big Ripoff of taxpayers!

I can relate, as one day going from Reno to Silcon Valley, normally 4 to 5 hours, took 13 hours due to bad weather on Donnor Pass and the mother-of-all traffic jams.

Joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved America.
