Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Exodus 11

The Plague on the Firstborn

11 Now the Lord had said to Moses, “I will bring one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt. After that, he will let you go from here, and when he does, he will drive you out completely. 2 Tell the people that men and women alike are to ask their neighbors for articles of silver and gold.” 3 (The Lord made the Egyptians favorably disposed toward the people, and Moses himself was highly regarded in Egypt by Pharaoh’s officials and by the people.)

4 So Moses said, “This is what the Lord says: ‘About midnight I will go throughout Egypt. 5 Every firstborn son in Egypt will die, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sits on the throne, to the firstborn son of the female slave, who is at her hand mill, and all the firstborn of the cattle as well. 6 There will be loud wailing throughout Egypt—worse than there has ever been or ever will be again. 7 But among the Israelites not a dog will bark at any person or animal.’ Then you will know that the Lord makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel. 8 All these officials of yours will come to me, bowing down before me and saying, ‘Go, you and all the people who follow you!’ After that I will leave.” Then Moses, hot with anger, left Pharaoh.

9 The Lord had said to Moses, “Pharaoh will refuse to listen to you—so that my wonders may be multiplied in Egypt.” 10 Moses and Aaron performed all these wonders before Pharaoh, but the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let the Israelites go out of his country.

What is interesting about Today's Reading is that it is a Prediction of the Tenth Plague rather than the Fulfillment of it. One presumes that this is a parting shot just before Moses leaves the presence of Pharaoh, as Pharaoh has said, "The next time you see my face you will surely die."

Now, the Scriptures have been calling the King of Egypt "Pharaoh" all along, and so have we, but that wasn't his name. "Pharaoh" means "Great House", and is used in much the same way we say "The White House" when referring to the President of our own country. We always know the actual name of the man who occupies the White House (although sometimes I wonder if the occupant does), but in this Account we have no idea what "Pharaoh's" name actually was. Cecil B. DeMille gave the character the name "Rhamses", but it was an invention necessitated by the need to have a real person with a real name in the role.

In Ancient Egypt, however, Pharaoh was considered a god-in-training, and, after his death was going to be promoted to be an avatar of Osiris (or maybe Horus, or maybe Ra, or maybe Khepri) and be responsible for moving the Sun across the sky by day, and keeping it safely moving through the darkness at night. While alive, Pharaoh was also responsible for the yearly flooding of the Nile and the success of agriculture. He was a busy man, but also had to make sure he produced an heir, of Royal Blood (which made a very small pool of potential wives), and healthy enough to succeed him as King. This was what was expected of him, and being a human being was superfluous. Nevertheless, he was human, and so he had a heart, and that heart could be hardened.

Another reason why we don't know the man's name is because, in Ancient Egypt, the names and faces of those who fell from favor were erased from the records. Like Winston Smith in the Ministry of Truth, cutting out newspaper clippings that contradict the current regime, and dropping them down the Memory Hole (Orwell's "1984"), the stonecutters and artisans of Ancient Egypt were forever busy chipping away the names of failed Pharaoh's, and the Pharaoh of the Exodus was a real doozy. If it were not for the Torah, we wouldn't even know that the man existed at all, so he was immortalized...but in a bad way.

Moses's parting shot was a warning. The Last Plague would be so severe that God was giving Pharaoh one last chance to repent. But Pharaoh would have to let ALL the People go, with their young and their old, their children, their livestock, and everything they owned. It was not to be in increments or with conditions. Not only that, but God instructed the Hebrews to go to their Egyptian neighbors and ask for silver and gold for the journey. The Bible tells us that the Egyptians gladly gave the "plunder" to the Hebrews. This could mean a few things:

1. The Egyptians had had enough and just wanted the Hebrews to GO AWAY.

2. The Egyptians were hoping to bribe the Hebrews to prevent futher plagues.

3. Some of the Egyptians were beginning to "see the light".

Whatever the reason, or combination of reasons, the net effect was that Pharaoh now stood alone in his wickedness and hardness of heart.

When the leadership of a country is wicked, the whole country suffers the consequences of God's Judgement. That is why we are enjoined to pray for our leaders, political and religious. Whenever God has brought Judgement upon a Nation, there is always a faithful remnant. In the next Chapter, we will learn how that Faithful Remnant would be passed over when the final plague hits.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Psalm 110

Of David. A Psalm.

1 The Lord says to my lord,
‘Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies your footstool.’

2 The Lord sends out from Zion
your mighty sceptre.
Rule in the midst of your foes.
3 Your people will offer themselves willingly
on the day you lead your forces
on the holy mountains.*
From the womb of the morning,
like dew, your youth* will come to you.
4 The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind,
‘You are a priest for ever according to the order of Melchizedek.’*

5 The Lord is at your right hand;
he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.
6 He will execute judgement among the nations,
filling them with corpses;
he will shatter heads
over the wide earth.
7 He will drink from the stream by the path;
therefore he will lift up his head.

Boy, you got that one right as we all painfully see with our “pharaoh”.

Joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved America,
