Sports hall, restaurant, club: What can become of churches?
In order for churches to be better attended, they sometimes need new functions. This poses challenges for dioceses
Last year, more than 72,000 people left the Catholic Church.
An indoor football pitch in Wettringen, a parish in North Rhine-Westphalia, measures nine by 18 metres. Nothing special really, yet it attracts attention. For where cheers echo from the vaulted ceiling today, not so long ago it was the prayers of believers.

That was the norm at the Texas Baptist church I grew up in.
The service started at 11 am. As the clock closed in on noon, you could feel the impatience growing if the preached went long.
I think once the deacons talked to him about time management. LOL
And on the fifth day, God created cheerleaders.
And they wore short skirts, and that was very good.
And on the sixth day, he created the football player.
And people paid to watch them hurt. And that was good.
And on the seventh day, they played football!
Six-two stack monster! Six-two stack monster! Ready — BREAK!”
Another idea would be to use that abandoned church to house people.
While I’m not 100% sure, but seeing that North Rhine-Westphalia is in Germany, I believe what they are calling football is what we call soccer. 🙂
When the Buccaneers were in their first Super Bowl ever in 2003, a megachurch in town had scheduled a revival meeting with the founder of their denomination, scheduled a year in advance, for the same time as the game. The meeting from changed from 6 PM to 3 PM, and was well attended. That was the only time football was allowed to interfere, I think.
