A strong majority of Generation Z and Millennials who say they have made a personal commitment to Christ do not attend church in person or online at least once a month, according to a new study.
The August edition of the "State of the Bible: USA 2022" report from the American Bible Society finds that 40% of Generation Z adults ages 18 and over attend church "primarily online." They were followed closely by 36% of churchgoers ages 77 and up.
However, the report suggests that among Gen Z and Millennials who have made a meaningful commitment to Jesus, about 66% do not attend church either in person or online at least once a month.
The study produced 2,598 responses from a representative sample of adults 18 and older within all 50 states and the District of Columbia collected from January 10-28, 2022.
Gen Z is defined as those ages 10 to 25 in 2021, while Millennials were defined as ages 26 to 41 in 2021.
While more than half (54%) of all adults up to age 57 said they have "made a personal commitment to Jesus Christ that is still important in your life today," fewer than a third of those in the three youngest generations who have made that commitment are "practicing" Christians.
"This should challenge every Christian and ministry leader to intentionally cultivate relationships with their younger neighbors, who are often seeking security and hope amidst ever-increasing anxiety," said John Farquhar Plake, director of ministry intelligence for the American Bible Society. "It's our prayer that every generation is able to meaningfully connect with the Word of God, engaging with it as a way of life and actively living out their faith in community."
Expecting to pry youth away from video games and the likes of TikTok and air conditioning to even play a informal basketball game can be disappointing, let along church worship study and and fellowship. But which reflects on the parent(s).
Tells you two things:
1) The “commitment to Christ” most people in America have actually is so unrelated to biblical faith as to be unrecognizable by the scriptures.
2) The church in America is in horrid shape. I am not sure I would go either, if it were not commanded.... and I don’t mean commanded to go to some institutional brick building.
I know a few Gen-z kids that have found Christ online through memes. It is kinda cool.
I guess it all depends on what the definition of “commitment” is.
You can make a commitment, but not actually be committed.
I am no longer a younger adult, but I have always liked going to church and needed to go. I still do. Pretty much every Sunday I learn something new, and that’s after sixty years of church attendance. There are still good congregations out there if you look. I can imagine solitary Christianity.
Should be, I can’t imagine solitary Christianity.
How many absolute liberals and leftists and democrats attend church regularly?
A lot.
Given the watered-down preaching at many churches it might be safer to be discerning about where to attend, etc.
Much can be said about the level of heresy out there. Very frustrating to see the disregard of clear Scriptural teachings and the social gospel taught by the acolytes of Satan.
Two thirds(or more) of modern churches have no use for the bible.
>Two thirds(or more) of modern churches have no use for the bible.
One could quibble about % or whatever but I think this is the root of the situation of un-attenders.
Imagine a young Christian reads through the Bible and understands A, B, C, and D. This person then goes to a nearby church and sees/hears not-A, ignore-B, C is optional, and D as interpreted by social justice theory.
Anyone in that position can hardly be blamed for avoiding that pit.
Can ya tho???
Exactly that. Also, many churches have fallen under cult like worship over their “rockstar” pastors. And don’t forget all the sexual abuse that’s going on too.
A while back, maybe 10 years ago, home-based churches were the talk of the town.
Could it be worship is more home centered with friends gathering?
IDK, but this is what a lot of Hinduism is, based in the home. Perhaps this is a trend in Christianity?
Then they don’t have a commitment to Christ. The church IS the body of Christ.
Given what we are seeing in the Catholic Church and others , I’m not sure that this is bad thing
In this day and age, and depending on the denomination, I say "GOOD!".
A relationship with God and the Christ is not dependent on the standing with the mankind created nonsense that is morphing, daily, within the phoney ornamental walls of buildings or the community of the human church within.
Young people are right in their decision not to attend church. So, what might those reasons be.

Because few so-called churches have a commitment to Christ?
