From PghBaldy link:
“In other words, the amendment would forever guarantee the right of the Southern people to own slaves.”
“By tacitly supporting Corwin's amendment, Lincoln hoped to convince the South that he would not move to abolish slavery and, at the minimum, keep the border states of Maryland, Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, and North Carolina from seceding.”
“Corwin's amendment, as it was then called, was one of three attempts to resolve the secession crisis between Lincoln's election in November 1860 and the firing on Fort Sumter in April 1861.”

And from DiogenesLamp link:
“The Corwin Amendment was the last-ditch compromise effort to protect slavery where it existed by enshrining it in the Constitution.”

The discerning reader will no doubt recognize which link is from lost causer mythology.

Bearing in mind what the man himself very publicly wrote:

“My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union; and what I forbear, I forbear because I do not believe it would help to save the Union. I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause. I shall try to correct errors when shown to be errors; and I shall adopt new views so fast as they shall appear to be true views. I have here stated my purpose according to my view of official duty; and I intend no modification of my oft-expressed personal wish that all men every where could be free. Yours,
A. Lincoln

Italics by me.

The inherited sin of slavery is destroying us as a free people. My grandfather was a teenager during the Civil War. His father, as a second son because of primogeniture laws of the time was landless. His mother, who died before the Civil War passed as white, but had African slave ancestry. Her dowry included about 500 hundred acres farm land, a large house on the Potomac, six slave, one of whom was her half sister and close companion, whom the family maintained as part of the family after the Civil War. Things are usually a little more complex than as history portrays.
