Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Genesis 32

Jacob Meets Esau

33 Jacob looked up and there was Esau, coming with his four hundred men; so he divided the children among Leah, Rachel and the two female servants. 2 He put the female servants and their children in front, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph in the rear. 3 He himself went on ahead and bowed down to the ground seven times as he approached his brother.

4 But Esau ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. And they wept. 5 Then Esau looked up and saw the women and children. “Who are these with you?” he asked.

Jacob answered, “They are the children God has graciously given your servant.”

6 Then the female servants and their children approached and bowed down. 7 Next, Leah and her children came and bowed down. Last of all came Joseph and Rachel, and they too bowed down.

8 Esau asked, “What’s the meaning of all these flocks and herds I met?”

“To find favor in your eyes, my lord,” he said.

9 But Esau said, “I already have plenty, my brother. Keep what you have for yourself.”

10 “No, please!” said Jacob. “If I have found favor in your eyes, accept this gift from me. For to see your face is like seeing the face of God, now that you have received me favorably. 11 Please accept the present that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me and I have all I need.” And because Jacob insisted, Esau accepted it.

12 Then Esau said, “Let us be on our way; I’ll accompany you.”

13 But Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the children are tender and that I must care for the ewes and cows that are nursing their young. If they are driven hard just one day, all the animals will die. 14 So let my lord go on ahead of his servant, while I move along slowly at the pace of the flocks and herds before me and the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir.”

15 Esau said, “Then let me leave some of my men with you.”

“But why do that?” Jacob asked. “Just let me find favor in the eyes of my lord.”

16 So that day Esau started on his way back to Seir. 17 Jacob, however, went to Sukkoth, where he built a place for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is called Sukkoth.[a]

18 After Jacob came from Paddan Aram,[b] he arrived safely at the city of Shechem in Canaan and camped within sight of the city. 19 For a hundred pieces of silver,[c] he bought from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, the plot of ground where he pitched his tent. 20 There he set up an altar and called it El Elohe Israel.[d]

Footnotes

a Genesis 33:17 Sukkoth means shelters.
b Genesis 33:18 That is, Northwest Mesopotamia
c Genesis 33:19 Hebrew hundred kesitahs; a kesitah was a unit of money of unknown weight and value.
d Genesis 33:20 El Elohe Israel can mean El is the God of Israel or mighty is the God of Israel.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

A friend of mine works tirelessly for a well-known Homeless Shelter that receives a lot of corporate donations. Some of these donations are in the form of designer clothing and footwear which are then sold to finance the Shelter. My friend (let's call her Mary) has several enormous yard sales each year with the proceeds going to the Shelter. The Yard Sales attract attention to the Shelter, raise a lot of money, and give people some excellent bargains. It is win-win-win for all concerned!

Anyway, her diligent efforts were recognized by the organization and they awarded her "Employee of the Year". This included a large cash award and a banquet where Mary would be presented with the Citation and a Check.

The prospect of appearing at the Presentation threw Mary into a tailspin of anxiety. She didn't think she deserved the attention, and vowed that she would not go to the banquet or accept the award. It was really causing her a lot of stress, as if she were being singled out for a special kind of torture!

Jacob couldn't believe that Esau had forgiven him. He brought a massive gift to appease his brother, and when Esau refused the gift, they had to wrangle a bit until he finally accepted it. The gift wasn't so much to enrich Esau as it was to assuage Jacob's own feelings of remorse. Finally, Esau accepts the gift. It took as much grace to accept the gift as it did for Jacob to give it.

Like the Cartoon Chipmonks "Chip and Dale" whose courtesy keeps them saying "After You, No After You", courtesy and humilty can sometimes hamper the Giver, Whose Good Pleasure is to share the Gift.

I advised Mary that the Honor being paid to her was one that gave the Orgnization PLEASURE to give to her. A refusal would be hurtful. If she wanted to donate the award back to the Shelter, that would be acceptable, but she shouldn't refuse the Honor. And so, she did that very thing. She went to the banquet, accepted the award, and donated the money back to the shelter. Then she hid in the Ladies Room for the rest of the banquet. (Oh Well).

God says in His Word that He doesn't want ANYBODY to perish. Those who receive His Gift become Children of God (John 1). But there are those who would say "I don't deserve it. I'm too far gone." Well, NONE of us do. We are ALL "too far gone." And yet, God forgives us. Jacob left his brother while Esau was in a murderous rage. Jacob stayed far away for over twenty years. He was "too far gone" too. And yet, upon his return, Esau welcomed him with open arms. The gift of livestock wasn't necessary for Jacob to be forgiven, but Jacob needed to give something back after all he had done before. And Esau, had the grace to accept Jacob's gift even though he didn't need it.

The story of Jacob and Esau is one of the great "Reconciliation Stories" in the Bible. There are more too come.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Psalm 8

To the leader: according to The Gittith. A Psalm of David.

1 O Lord, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory above the heavens.
2 Out of the mouths of babes and infants
you have founded a bulwark because of your foes,
to silence the enemy and the avenger.

3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars that you have established;
4 what are human beings that you are mindful of them,
mortals* that you care for them?

5 Yet you have made them a little lower than God,*
and crowned them with glory and honour.
6 You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under their feet,
7 all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
8 the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

9 O Lord, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

"The Meeting of Jacob and Esau"
Gerit Claesz Bleker

_ Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids.

And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her
children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost.
And he passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.

And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept.

And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, Who are those with thee? And he said, The children which God hath graciously given thy servant.

Then the handmaidens came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves.

And Leah also with her children came near, and bowed themselves: and after came Joseph near and Rachel, and they bowed themselves.

And he said, What meanest thou by all this drove which I met? And he said, These are to find grace in the sight of my lord.

And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; keep that thou hast unto thyself.

And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me.

Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it.

And he said, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee.

And he said unto him, My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me: and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die.

Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant: and I will lead on softly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to endure, until I come unto my lord unto Seir.

And Esau said, Let me now leave with thee some of the folk that are with me. And he said, What needeth it? let me find grace in the sight of my lord.

So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir.

And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him an house, and made booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.

And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padanaram; and pitched his tent before the city.

And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for an hundred pieces of money.

And he erected there an altar, and called it EleloheIsrael.
