Fr. Jesusmary is permitted to say Mass privately on the condition that he refrains from writing criticism of the Roman pontiff.
(LifeSiteNews) – In a June 4 audience with Cardinal Marc Ouellet, Pope Francis approved the sanctions first laid by Opus Dei upon Father Jesusmary (the pen name of Abbé Janvier Gbénou) for publicly rebuking Pope Francis in response to some of his controversial statements and beliefs.
The African priest is now barred from any active ministry, including celebrating the Sacrifice of the Mass in public. He is permitted to say Mass privately on the condition that he refrains from writing criticism of the Roman pontiff.
Fr. Jesusmary started criticizing the Pope in 2020 when Pope Francis was heard publicly endorsing civil same-sex unions. Pope Francis stated in an October 2020 documentary: “Homosexuals have a right to be a part of the family. They’re children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out or be made miserable because of it.” The Pope also said, “What we have to create is a civil union law. That way they are legally covered. I stood up for that.” In addition to opposing this support for same-sex unions, Fr. Jesusmary also began to criticize the Pontiff’s approval of situation ethics, which can be found in his post-synodal exhortation Amoris Laetitia, as well as other public papal statements.
In a new letter to Pope Francis (see full statement below) responding the Pontiff’s decision to endorse the penalties placed upon him, Fr. Jesusmary challenged him by saying:
“I take note of your decision, which I do not approve of because it is unjust. Moreover, I cannot, in conscience, renounce my public criticism of Pope Francis because, since 2016, you yourself have seriously lacked ‘respect and obedience to God and the........
