Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Genesis 22

Abraham Tested

22 Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!”

“Here I am,” he replied.

2 Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”

3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5 He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”

6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, 7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?”

“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.

“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”

8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.

9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!”

“Here I am,” he replied.

12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”

13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram[a] caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.”

15 The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time 16 and said, “I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, 18 and through your offspring[b] all nations on earth will be blessed,[c] because you have obeyed me.”

19 Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.

Since I was born less than eight years after Hiroshima and Nagasaki and a year before the first H-Bomb Test, my childhood was filled with images of Total Annihilation of Planet Earth. Creaky, Low-Budget Sci-Fi Movies (and some good ones too) filled my head with thoughts of The End of The World. My favotite was "The Day The Earth Stood Still". Along with Sci-Fi, I also watched a lot of Strategic Air Command Training Films, as my Dad spent quite a bit of time repairing them as part of his job. (I never figured that one out!). Along with Sci-Fi and the SAC films, there were constant ads on TV for Fallout Shelters and Civil Defense Instruction. In School, we had "Duck-and-Cover", "Air-Raid Drills", and, of course, The Cuban Missile Crisis, which scared the pants off of me.

Perhaps the scariest thing of all was when I would be watching Captain Kangaroo and suddenly the program would be interrupted by a loud siren. After the siren had screamed for what seemed like forever, a manly voice would intone:

"THIS HAS BEEN A TEST. HAD IT BEEN AN ACTUAL ALERT, YOU WOULD HAVE RECEIVED FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS. THIS IS ONLY A TEST."

Whew! But I knew in my heart that one day, the alrm would sound and the voice would say something different, as in:

"THIS IS NOT A TEST!"

I shudder to think of what the "Further Instructions" would be.

All three of The "Abrahamic Religions" relate the Story of "The Binding of Isaac" (Hebrew: עֲקֵידַת יִצְחַק ʿAqēḏaṯ Yīṣḥaq, in Hebrew also simply "the Binding", הָעֲקֵידָה‎ hāʿAqēḏā),[1] ). Rabbis have discussed it for centuries, as it is a total puzzle why God would demand a Human Scrifice from Abraham. It was forbidden and unthinkable! In the Prophet Jeremiah, God says that the "idea wouldn't even cross His mind"! Not only that, but the human was Abraham's beloved son, and the Son of the Promise. How could God keep His Promise to Abraham if Isaac was dead? How could God ask Abraham such a thing? Many theories arose and are preserved through the Commentaries. The prevailing theory is that, if Abraham went through with it, Isaac would have been raised from the dead.

This idea is echoed in the famous "Faith Chapter" in the New Testament Book of Hebrews. Chapter 11 of that deep book chronicles the incredible Faith of the Patriarchs and Old-Testament Saints. And so, at least on that point, Christian and Jewish Scholars agree. The Omniscience and Omnipotence of God transcends Natural Law. He Who created Life can also resurrect it. And, we also agree that God keeps His Promises, sometimes in ways we would never expect.

Christian interpreters, however, go a step further and see the whole story as a prophecy of the Crucifixion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The hill, the wood, the thorns, the ram as a substitute, and even the obedience of Abraham all seem to point to that dark day on Golgotha 2000 years ago. Even the quote from Abraham, "God will provide the Lamb", fits into the Doctrine of Substitutionary Atonement.

Islam believes that the event happened, but attempts to place Ishmael on the altar instead of Isaac. But, even with that disagreement, it is still referred to as "The Binding of Isaac". Hmmm.

One thing all three agree upon is that this was a Test of Abraham's Faith.

And he passed with Flying Colors.
