3000 YEARS AND HER NAME IS STILL SYNONYMOUS WITH EXPENSIVE STUFF................
She has an enduring fame.

A very good morning to you.
Jesus mentioned her in a prophecy and referred to her as ‘The Queen of The South’, IIRC..................
It still amazes me how many renaissance painters thought Sheba was white. Although I disagree historically with the painters who painted her as being all colors of the rainbow, she was African and ran an African kingdom.
Mostly true. Renaissance painters and most medieval painters were trying to show their European audiences the gist of the story by putting the characters in local garb, so they could understand the situations better. Most Europeans north of the Mediterranean had never seen a black person, and those that had were afraid of them becaus ethe ones they saw were Moors, Islamic North Africans...............
The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.
Some nice illustrations and paintings. Of note for me: #62 by Francesco del Cossa. Striking colors, architectural symmetry, I like the difference between the Queen’s disciplined assistants and the men behind Solomon who are talking to each other or wandering. Cossa was an influential painter of the 15th c. Italian Renaissance.
#66 by the British artist Slocombe whose work was popular at the end of the 19th c. He was also a notable etcher.
# 76, by the French Le Soeur, famous for his paintings of religious subjects. We met him previously with the splendid painting of The Rape of Tamar.
Ending with the stained glass windows, especially #80 and #86, remarkably beautiful.
I especially like the composition of the last one, #86: every square inch promotes the theme. Might be my favorite fenster ever, although that’s a bit like singling out one’s favorite child.
Yep! That’s the One!.................
I like Jesus’ candor with his “greater than Solomon” self-referral.
Mine too, such a magnificent work and the artist is unknown, just an artist from the studio.
“The window was created in memory of the church’s one-time chaplain, the Reverend Alfred Brown-Watson, who served in a military campaign in the Sudan – which was near the ancient kingdom of Sheba.”

How clever and considerate to honor the soldier’s service so appropriately.
