Fr. John Dolan, a priest with an LGBT-positive record, has been appointed by the Vatican to be an auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of San Diego.
Announcements about Dolan’s appointment repeatedly noted his pastoral work with marginalized people. In the past few years, this work has included ministry with LGBT Catholics and their families.
Dolan has been the diocesan vicar for clergy and pastored two churches, including the welcoming St. John the Evangelist parish in the Hillcrest neighborhood where many of San Diego’s LGBT residents live. Bishop Robert McElroy last year acknowledged the parish as a place where LGBT people have said they “feel particularly welcome” and, according to McElroy, “that’s a very good thing.”
Dolan has described his experiences with LGBT communities at St. John the Evangelist as “an eye-opening experience. . .but also a joyful experience.” These experiences led him to suggest LGBT issues were the “elephant in the room” at San Diego’s 2016 diocesan synod. Highlighting problems in how the church approaches younger Catholics, Dolan commented:
” ‘There are two different forms of doing church. . .One is very dialogical, from a dialogical sense, and the other is from a monological sense. And we have dealt with that monological world: Things come from on high, they get shelved in some pastor’s corner, then there’s some thought that comes down, but ultimately it’s all ‘We’re going to tell you what to think.’ . . .
” ‘Young adults have an acceptance of the LGBT experience. It is simply a part of their world, and they look at us, and say, “What is the problem?” ‘ “
Notably, Bishop McElroy also affirmed the need to address such issues, saying he was surprised at “where the LGBT question would come up” in the discussion section on the spirituality of marriage.” McElroy is himself a Francis appointee.
The pope’s influence on the U.S. episcopate is continuing to grow. Among the “Francis Bishops,” Bishop John Stowe of Lexington, Kentucky offered scriptural reflections at New Ways Ministry’s national Symposium, and Chicago’s Archbishop Blase Cupich has made repeated positive comments about LGBT people. There are presently eight vacant dioceses, and several dozen bishops approaching the age of mandatory retirement.
The Times of San Diego reported that in addition to his episcopal duties, Dolan will remain at the two parishes he now oversees. He will likely continue to learn from and be moved by the many faithful LGBT Catholics and their families whom he encounters. Hopefully, his new position will enable him to help open wider doors of welcome to LGBT people in San Diego.

Bergoglio is on a tear with these homosexual appointments.
I really hate articles like this because it is seriously inaccurate and I’m pretty sure that you know it.
Frankie Bergoglio is about as much responsible for appointing this homofascist bishop as Donald Trump is responsible for commissioning a wokester second lieutenant. (But if you look at the language is the commissioning document for new butter bars, it sounds like the President himself is placing special trust in that person.....bs)
What has actually happened is that McElroy recommended him to the Nuncio (through the USCCB). The Nuncio concurred. Then it went to the Congregation for Bishops (now called the Dicastery for Bishops). They chopped off on it and then took this name with probably 20 or 30 others and said Frankie, are you ok with it?
Plenty of crap bishops were appointed using this same process during the JPII regime and during the BXVI regime as well, but we didn’t start screaming that JPII appointed this scum or BXVI appointed this pedo. Why? Because, while they were responsible in a “the buck stops here” fashion, they certainly didn’t personally go out and select these people. (Examples:Bernadin, Wuerl, McCarrick, etc)
What I CAN blame the Pope on is:
1) Sending the correct message as far as his teaching office. His words matter. JPII and BXVI were very good at that. Frankie, not so much...
2) Managing the bureaucratic process a lot better to keep pedos and pedo-enablers (along with anti-traditionals, politicians, and communist infiltrators) away from being appointed in the first place. Example: a simple grading rubric could be filled out by the bishop making the recommendation and validated by the nuncio could go a long way. Wouldn’t protect against lies, but it would help. The nuncio sending a competent agent out to see the candidates in practice for a couple of weeks would be another thing. But none of that happens. So I can’t give passing marks to any of those three in that area: JPII, BXVI, or Frankie.
Sadly, I don’t see click-baitey articles discuss the real problems going on.
I disagree. I think Bergoglio is fully aware of the homosexualists he is promoting.
I don’t think you can seriously say he mistakenly elevated McElroy to the college of Cardinals over McElroy’s own Archbishop, Salvatore Cordileone.
And it was Bergoglio who appointed the current U.S. nuncio, Christophe Pierre, who is hand-picking all these favorites of Bergoglio.
Maybe you didn't; but I did. JP II is most responsible for choosing those who elected Bergoglio.
But now every post-VCII pope is being canonized to cover for each other and keep that damn "spirit" of VC II" alive.
JP II was personally warned of the sexual abuse crimes of both Teddy McCarrick and Marcial Maciel. Rather than disciplining them, he swept it under the rug. You can't blame this dereliction of duty on any of the pope's intermediaries.
I was talking about bishops, not cardinals. Different animal altogether. There are, +/-, 150 cardinals in the whole world. There are how many thousands of bishops?
You are quite right in that the pope knows all of the episcopate that are nuncios. And he bloody well is very, very familiar with the Cardinal in charge of the Secretariat of State (that is over all them).
My point is that the systems that a given pope manages (or fails to manage) is the primary blame here.
Again I disagree, I think the "man" (Bergoglio), not the "systems" is the primary blame.
After all, the dictator pope has managed to take control of all "systems" (e.g., the Congregations of the Church) under his authority, and even those religious communities that should have been outside of his immediate usurpation of authority , e.g., the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate and the Knights of Malta.
The man organizes, directs, and controls the system. He has the power to change how that system is organized and controlled because he directs it.
It appears that you are thinking I’m giving the poser Frankie a break in saying this. I’m not. That system has been in place for hundreds of years. The only Pope in modern memory who actually tried to do something to correct it was Pius X (with his Oath Against Modernism). And even that was ineffective because people could lie when signing that Oath.
The entire system is rotten and has been for a long, long time. Frankie is just the latest symptom of that rot. The Church needs to receive some serious, long-standing divine purgation to bring it back to where it needs to be. Sorry to say, but I’m talking about some Diocletian-level purgation.
