Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Genesis 17

The Covenant of Circumcision

17 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty[a]; walk before me faithfully and be blameless. 2 Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.”

3 Abram fell facedown, and God said to him, 4 “As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations. 5 No longer will you be called Abram[b]; your name will be Abraham,[c] for I have made you a father of many nations. 6 I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. 7 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. 8 The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.”

9 Then God said to Abraham, “As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come. 10 This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised. 11 You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you. 12 For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner—those who are not your offspring. 13 Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant. 14 Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised in the flesh, will be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.”

15 God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. 16 I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.”

17 Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?” 18 And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!”

19 Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac.[d] I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation. 21 But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you by this time next year.” 22 When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.

23 On that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael and all those born in his household or bought with his money, every male in his household, and circumcised them, as God told him. 24 Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised, 25 and his son Ishmael was thirteen; 26 Abraham and his son Ishmael were both circumcised on that very day. 27 And every male in Abraham’s household, including those born in his household or bought from a foreigner, was circumcised with him.

_______________________________________________________

The Neponset River flows right through the City of Boston before it empties into the larger and more famous Charles River. There was a Paper Mill upstream from where we lived, and so, the river was polluted, making it off-limits to us kids. However, there was a long easement of fallow land, about 100 feet between the chainlink fence at the river's edge to our back yard and the back yards of of our neighbors. This was city land and was where we played. This area was known as "The Back Field".

One neighbor, who happened to be German, planted an impenetrable blackberry hedge from his property all the way to the river, cutting off the Back Field from anyone who wished to walk its length, which was over a mile. We kids had a "field" day mocking this illegal aquisition of property, calling the area the neighbor took over "Poland". After all, WW2 had ended barely a decade earlier, and our Dads were all Veterans of that War. We kids speculated that the German neighbor was probably a veteran too...but on the other side.

So, one day my best girlfriend Debbie and I decided we were going to re-conquer the Back Field and give it back to The PEOPLE. We went as close to the thorny hedge as we dared, and made a covenant. Debbie plucked a thorn from the blackberry hedge and pierced her finger, making the blood flow. Then she handed the thorn to me. She said that the Indians did this to make themselves "Blood Brothers" and it was a vow to remain friends forever. I tried and tried, but I couldn't push the thorn hard enough to pierce my skin. Maybe I just didn't want to!

The two of us looked at the blackberry hedge, 100 feet long, and six feet high. Then we decided it wasn't worth it. The invasion was called off on account of thorns.

Circumcision is God's Covenant with Abram, sealed in Blood. Lest it seems that the only one spilling his blood was Abram, look forward to Jesus of Nazareth, generations later.

Many times, a contract is needed to effect a name change. A marriage contract, a court order, a name-change petition, or a change on a birth certificate all require some kind of legal paperwork, and probably a fee. In this Covenant, God gives a syllable of His Holy Name to both Abraham and Sarah. Both of them receive an "H" in their names where there wasn't one before. The "H" is part of God's Name that sounds like a breath. The words for "breath" in both Hebrew (Ruach) and Greek (Pneuma) also mean "spirit". And so, in this Covenant, God gave Abraham and Sarah Himself, The Holy Spirit, and the Breath of Life.

There was also an area of Land promised, which, at the moment, was occupied by a lot more than blackberry bushes.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Psalm 110

Of David. A Psalm.

1 The Lord says to my lord,
‘Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies your footstool.’

2 The Lord sends out from Zion
your mighty sceptre.
Rule in the midst of your foes.
3 Your people will offer themselves willingly
on the day you lead your forces
on the holy mountains.*
From the womb of the morning,
like dew, your youth* will come to you.
4 The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind,
‘You are a priest for ever according to the order of Melchizedek.’*

5 The Lord is at your right hand;
he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.
6 He will execute judgement among the nations,
filling them with corpses;
he will shatter heads
over the wide earth.
7 He will drink from the stream by the path;
therefore he will lift up his head.

Always wondered about His renaming, but I've been too dull to look into it. Thanks for supplying my lack with your cogent explanation.

AMEN!
