MEMORIAL OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, MOTHER OF THE CHURCH
JOHN 19:25-34
Friends, today we celebrate the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
Mother of the Church.
We recall that, from the cross, Jesus pronounced this word to St. John:
“Behold, your mother.” In saying this, he was giving Mary not only to John,
but through John to the whole Church.
Mary would be the mother of all the beloved disciples of Jesus up and down the centuries.
Then we recall that, at the Annunciation, the angel declared to the maiden of Nazareth:
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you;
therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God.”
The two persons required for the Incarnation were the Holy Spirit and the Blessed Mother.
Now we can make the connection: in becoming the mother of Christ, Mary, by extension,
would become the mother of all those members of Christ’s Mystical Body across space and time.
Just as the Holy Spirit and the Blessed Mother were required to bring about the Incarnation in history,
so those same two agents are required to bring about the birth of Christ in our souls.

Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother
and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas,
and Mary of Magdala.
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved,
he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.”
Then he said to the disciple,
“Behold, your mother.”
And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
After this, aware that everything was now finished,
in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled,
Jesus said, “I thirst.”
There was a vessel filled with common wine.
So they put a sponge soaked in wine on a sprig of hyssop
and put it up to his mouth.
When Jesus had taken the wine, he said,
“It is finished.”
And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit.
Now since it was preparation day,
in order that the bodies might not remain on the
cross on the sabbath,
for the sabbath day of that week was a solemn one,
the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken
and they be taken down.
So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first
and then of the other one who was crucified with Jesus.
But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead,
they did not break his legs,
but one soldier thrust his lance into his side,
and immediately
Blood and water flowed out.+++

Standing by the cross of Jesus were - his mother
- and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas,
- and Mary of Magdala.
If Clopas = Cleophas (Greek) = Alphaeus (Aramaic), and according to Hegesippus (2nd Century historian) this Clopas was, in fact, the brother of Joseph, it explains how Mary of Clopas was a sister to Mary the mother of Jesus and how Jesus had cousins rendered as brothers and sisters in English

And if that's not interesting enough- and though we can't be sure..
Its' though that the Apostle John's Biological Mother - Salome-
who was also a sister of Mary- making the Apostle John- also a cousin Of Jesus-
She was also said to be at the Cross..
Now that makes it intriguing that Jesus would give over to John,
The Blessed Virgin as a second Mother to the Apostle whom he loved... (Behold).... with his birth Mother nearby.
Really putting a twist into the making of St. John to Jesus...truly:
A "Brother from another Mother..."

Only you could make a crude, blasphemous comment like that Murph: implying, St. John was also conceived by the Holy Ghost.
Try thinking before you post such garbage.

I don’t get it; probably better that I not know. At any rate, Mary *Miriam* is my mother.

Think about it.
Brother by another mother means they have the same father.

Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?

Lighten up Francis!...
My reply was cute, not crude, with just a touch of whimsy I should add.
Don't be your typical maroon here...
Think...on The Gospel of today's Blessed Virgin's Feast Day...(read celebration)...
Christ from the Cross...
looks at the "disciple whom he Loved" and said to his Mother:
"WOMAN, Behold YOUR SON"!
You knucklehead, YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE The Disciple whom Christ loves...
The one he wants to give his Blessed Mother to...c'mon man...
She has been given to You, me, 1981- every Christian as we strive to fulfill that role as disciple of Christ. Who he loves...
making yes, a brotherhood (and sisterhood)
So then are you saying Christ is blaspheming when he says to his Mother next- br>"Behold YOUR SON"??... Really?
Think about that... and If Christ gives his Mother, full of Grace, to us down through the ages, aren't we then the luckiest of Brothers?
Are we not brothers and sisters then through her, as we are sons and daughters of God?
Your missing the whole family picture here man. You gotta get into the picture...
And as far as your lack of being able get "being conceived by the Holy Ghost"...
Catholics believe we must be, and so are, Born from above...through Water AND SPIRIT... in our re-birth
WE GO NOWHERE WITHOUT THE SPIRIT IN US...
so thinking only the Virgin Mary can have the Spirit - Is missing the boat. (And besides Elizabeth gets an honorable mention here too as well.)
There is so much wrong with your misguided faux outrage here, lacking simple Church teaching, that I just can't get into... read the Catechism...
But I'd say its reverence, your looking for... real righteousness...
I suggest to you, my brother from a different mother...
pop in your Sister Sledge 8-Track tape... and start grooving to....
"We are Family..."

Does every man obey the "covenant of our fathers", whatever that may be? Care to share said covenant?
