In addition, statues of angels on either side of the tabernacle ‘were decapitated and destroyed.’
BROOKLYN, New York (LifeSiteNews) — A tabernacle was ripped from the altar of a Catholic church in New York City and stolen after the consecrated hosts it contained were scattered over the altar.
The outrage took place in the parish church of St. Augustine in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
Father Frank Tumino, the pastor of St. Augustine and St. Francis Xavier Parish, said he had gone into the church at around 3.50 p.m. on Saturday afternoon to hear confessions when he discovered the altar damaged altar and the tabernacle missing.
“This is devastating, as the Tabernacle is the central focus of our Church outside of worship, holding the Body of Christ, the Eucharist, which is delivered to the sick and homebound,” said Tumino.
The perpetrators used tools to cut through a steel cabinet which contained the “pure 18-karat gold tabernacle with jewels.” The precious object is believed to be worth $2 million.
“I could see that they had been working on [the tabernacle]; they had been really well prepared and working on cutting the steel cabinet that covered it,” Tumino said.
The priest described the removal of the tabernacle as “very, very violent.”

Didnt this happen weeks ago?
or is this another one stolen from a second church
Messing with the House of God. Wouldn’t want to be them. Some years ago a nun was raped in NYC. The mob found the rapist before the cops did. Didn’t have to worry about him posting bail.
back in the good old days, the mafia took care of this kind of thing
you’d find the prep in various garbage pails around the city
Oh, how nice that it’s NOT being investigated as a hate crime. That’s so reassuring.
Isn’t the Church better off without the 2 million dollar gold box?
This is the second one I’ve read about.
A couple of weeks ago a tabernacle was stolen from a church in the Houston area.
The contents of the 2 million dollar box is of infinite value.
I have a Protestant friend who says - what is a church of Christ doing with so much priceless artwork in the Vatican and elsewhere?
My answer to him is - what makes it so valuable? Did Michelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel thinking “this is going to be worth a million bucks someday!”
No. He painted it to be beautiful and to glorify God. If something achieves that, then humanity automatically puts a high value on it,
1 *Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2There they made him a supper; Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at table with him. 3Mary took a pound of costly ointment of pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. 4But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was to betray him), said, 5”Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii* and given to the poor?” 6This he said, not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box he used to take what was put into it. 7Jesus said, “Let her alone, let her keep it for the day of my burial. 8The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.” (John 12:1-8)
Prayers.
Being a Christian can sometimes be very difficult. I am required to hope perps like this find Salvation.
Did you steal the “2 million dollar gold box”?
Wonder if the days are coming when Catholic churches won’t be open during the day except just before and after Mass. If the Supremes return abortion to the states this month, the loons are gonna go nuts.
Jesus had no where to lay His head, and communion hosts are housed in that?
I sure hope that “ church” is not in the habit of whining about not having enough money.
“Pure” gold is 24karat not 18. These journalists are hopeless
Well after clicking the site and scrolling a little now I know what a tabernacle is. I could say a few sarcastic things, but this old country boy believes he doesn’t need to say what some are thinking.
I get the impression this church is a big church/cathedral you think some one would be some one at the church at all times. What gets me is the dirty deed wasn’t discovered until 3 PM Saturday. Something doesn’t pass the smell test to me, are these catholic cathedrals museums and nothing goes on at the church most of the time. I know small country churches where something is going on all the time, something like this would of been discovered before 3PM.
If you are saying that the gold and jewels of the tabernacle are oil washing the feet of Christ, I would have to agree that there is truth in that. I believe also, however, that there is some coveting of worldly wealth in it, as well. When it was decided to build a steel cage for it, I think it became more apparent what it was.
Now, as Mary’s sacrifice, it is gone.
What you say is true, but in this case, I expect the $2M to be the insurance appraisal and to pretty much constitute the value of the gold and stones.
Maybe it’s an “eye of the beholder” thing, but jewel encrusted gold has always looked like a tacky way to display wealth, to me. Michelangelo took worthless paint and made something that touched all who see it. Here, the wealth is intrinsically in the materials.
