Top administrative leaders for the Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Protestant denomination in America, said Tuesday that they will release a secret list of hundreds of pastors and other church-affiliated personnel accused of sexual abuse.
An attorney for the SBC’s Executive Committee announced the decision during a virtual meeting called in response to a scathing investigative report detailing how the committee mishandled allegations of sex abuse and stonewalled numerous survivors. The committee anticipates releasing the list Thursday.
During the meeting, top leaders and several committee members vowed to work toward changing the culture of the denomination and to listen more attentively to survivors’ voices and stories.
The report is expected to contain new details about former Jacksonville Pastor Darrell Gilyard. He was a pastor at Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church in Jacksonville in 2007.
He was convicted of having lewd contact with two teenage girls, sentenced to three years in prison and added to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s sex offenders list.
On Tuesday, News4JAX learned that the report includes allegations by a woman that she fought off an attempted rape in 1991 at First Baptist Church in Jacksonville. According to the report. Gilyard was working there when the Jacksonville woman, Tiffany Thigpen, says she was attacked. She said she was terrified and traumatized.
The report shows Dr. Jerry Vines, then-pastor of First Baptist, “was dismissive of her report” and told her “it would be embarrassing for her if others knew about it.”
And, according to the report, after that, Gilyard worked at a church in Texas, where other women accused him of abuse.

The first “Pope” was named Peter.
Coincidence? Hmmm.
"Pastor" Darrell Gilyard:
I’m starting to see a trend-—all the media outlets (all of the sudden) are coming up with reports on “Pastors screwing women”....I’m also hearing commercials on Talk radio about “If you’ve been abused by clergy...”
Something is going on and the media is throwing everything against the wall-—Notice how NO school incidents are reported of “child/teacher” rape? I’m not making excuses but something is up with the narrative.

Maybe. Certainly isn’t very Godly
Father Tony Lehman, in particular, always had a smile on his face, and knew everyone on campus by their first names. At the time, there were 2000 undergrads at GU.
Fr. Gerry Kohls, SJ was one of three priests I had as professors there. He was my Philosophy professor my senior year. His class had 14 students, twelve of whom were philosophy or theology majors studying for the priesthood. Starting out, I was a fish out of water.
I was flummoxed when I received an A on my first assignment. When I met with him, his guidance has stayed fresh over 45+ years: with philosophy, it's not what you say, it's how you say it, because philosophy is nothing but a bunch of BS.
A priest who graduated two years ahead of me was none other than Robert Spitzer, a brilliant priest who has written numerous books, and made many telecasts on EWTN. He is one of the most dynamic speakers I have ever encountered.
Those men embody the spirit of the Society of Jesus for me.
About 20 years ago, during the worst of the Catholic scandals, my parish came up with a simple, but very effective solution. When a child was in a class, or meeting with any adult (or priest), a second adult was required to be present.
It has been an effective policy from Day One. I don't think we started it specifically, but it's certainly widespread.
I taught mostly on Wednesday nights, and there were six teachers for the two classes. One night I arrived to learn the other five teachers couldn't make it that evening, so the task of teaching 40 5th graders was left to me.
The program director checked on me often, though it wasn't that necessary. It was an interesting night, as the subject was Agape love. While they were watching a short video, I pulled the concepts from a book published by Father Spitzer, titled "Healing the Culture."
I was a bit over the top, saying the Holy Spirit was with us, because I was a fellow alum of Fr. Spitzer, I read his book, and I attended a lecture of his on the subject at an alumni reunion.
It turned into a special night: these 6th graders were participating in our discussion, and asking questions that were above their grade level. There were no interruptions during that 45 minutes of discussion.
Sorry for being so off topic, but the church in question will be better off by attacking the problem quickly, and delivering the proper solution.
it’s a dried out, mainline, husk of an organized ‘religion.’ nothing to be done except for to get out or separate locally. God left the people running most of those ‘buildings’ long ago. the secular ‘authorities’ are the same.
the only thing you can do as an individual is make sure your daughters and wives are trained, carrying, and able to protect themselves, when they decide to join any ‘church.’
Reason I asked about the Bible is we have many “used to be” catholics at my nondenominational Christian church and some I’ve spoken with say they never read or owned a Bible while catholic.
Apologies for my ignorance I know almost nothing about Catholicism I was just curious.
Thank you for responding.
Many SBC members tithe, so they want to keep that collection plate full.

When I first joined the Catholic Church as a convert I was told to get two books: my catechism book and a Catholic Bible. Many were suggesting I get the Douay–Rheims Bible which I did. We were to bring both books to catechism class and told to read them.
I hear tales of Catholics who have never read the bible but I’ve never met them. I have protestants quoting bible verses at me like I’m an idiot then when they find out I can quote them right and left they faint. I’m like “we gave you that book yes we know it” and I roll my eyes. Sorry for the sarcasm but some of them really tick me off. Can’t you just treat me like a fellow believer and not the retarded child in the classroom?
If the pastor was an NFL quarterback, it would be all over the news.
Hey no judgement here I was just askin’.
✌
Where do you think all these other pastors got the idea from?
