(RNS) — Leaders at the Southern Baptist Convention’s Executive Committee released a formerly secret list Thursday (May 26) of sexual abusers, which had been kept by SBC staff since 2007.
The 205-page list includes details about 700 cases of abuse by pastors, Sunday school teachers, camp counselors, music ministers, bus drivers and missionaries, with about 400 tied to SBC churches from Alaska to Alabama. In almost all of the cases, the abuse had led to arrests and jail time.
According to a description from Guidepost Solutions, the firm that uncovered the list as part of a multimillion-dollar investigation into how SBC leaders dealt with abuse, the list began as a research project for an SBC committee in 2007.
That committee was looking into the possibility of creating a database of Southern Baptist abusers, an idea proposed by Oklahoma pastor Wade Burleson at the SBC’s 2007 annual meeting. At the time, the SBC was dealing with the aftermath of an ABC News report detailing abuse among Southern Baptists and other Protestants.
“My goal was to prevent guilty SBC ministers from transferring to another church or denomination to only re-offend,” Burleson wrote in a recent blog post.
According to the Guidepost report, an unnamed Executive Committee staffer began an initial search for Baptists accused of abuse and found the names of 66 “pastors, youth ministers, and deacons of Baptist churches who had been arrested or the subject of a civil suit regarding sexual crimes with minors.”
Executive Committee staff then worked to determine whether the alleged abuser or that person’s church was part of the SBC, and tracked whether there were convictions, often by adding links to news stories.

SBC spent years and years and years on top of more years keeping this info squelched ....
When the dam brakes open it breaks open is all I can say.
Doesn’t Gropin’ Joe have a list?
These abusers were charged and convicted.
Hardly swept under the rug.
I don’t get the outrage.
Gee, I thought it was just Catholic priests who were capable of molesting children.
There is a list ... Probably controlled by Pelosi... Of the Congress critters who have been accused and paid off with taxpayer funds to cover up their sexual activities. Trump should campaign against that list being a state secret.
Where’s the list?
Obviously if you let Protestant pastors get married then that would fix this problem.....
Sexual abuse runs across every demographic. The live in boyfriend is high on the list and he rarely gets reported. Rabbis, school teachers,..pick a group and evil has entered. Lawyers don’t take cases for the victims of abuse by school teachers, for eg, because teacher’s unions have a predetermined monetary cap. The Catholic Church has/had deep pockets so it was like shooting fish in a barrel. We know the Church has been infiltrated (See Taylor Marshall’s book of the same title) by sodomites and Marxists. The remnant of true, God-fearing believers across all churches is small, but they are filled with the Holy Spirit and on fire for the truth.
Hmmm??? Nasty Nazi Nancy’s list? How do you keep your caucus in line working against the interests of their voters??? Just speculating.
Still a drop in the bucket compared to what goes on in publik skoolz.
This information was NOT secret. The vast majority of those on the list had been arrested and convicted. Those are public records. Also, a large number of those were not Southern Baptists.
“Sexual abuse runs across every demographic.”
If one were to analyze random local news stories across the nation, I suspect that the number of instances of individual abuse would rival anything that could be found in a single organization. But that would defeat the narrative that this is somehow localized in backwards, prudish, Bible-thumping communities or churches.
The purpose of these stories, as they are run by the media, is seldom to help victims of abuse. They are most often to imply, “See! See! Hypocrites! Ergo, everything they pretend to believe is untrue!”
Abuse should be exposed wherever it is found. But it is ironic that a pagan society, which ultimately rejects any standard of sexual normality “imposed” by God, uses sexual abuse amongst church organizations to conclude that no norms Should exist. Their only condition for what is acceptable is “volition.” Of course, their desire to see the age of consent incrementally lowered is seen everywhere in television and film.
Who keeps the mainstream media’s database of their sex offenders?
Political. The SBC is next month.
Spot on! That I believe that countless brainwashed boobs are glued to the likes of Google, CNN et al., imbibing deeply of such illogical propaganda have many calling me cynical. I’m a simple realist- not a conspiracy theorist...conspiracy believer.
Bible says go out in pairs. We Catholics and everybody else that doesn’t follow this is putting blind trust that concupisence doesn’t exist. This is our fault. Total transparency is required and nobody yet is actually transparent.
