CHAPTER 11

In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king’s men and the whole Israelite army. But David remained in Jerusalem.

One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, “Isn’t this Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?”

I agree that responders often contribute substantially.

Difficult to name a favorite. Always excellent Lucas Cranach; the sensuous sculpture of Victor at #4, the two Massys paintings at #16 and #40; the beautiful #29 by Gerome and #30 by Verkolje. The Rembrandt is unusual as he chose not to include David but focus on the intimate moment of Bathsheba’s bath.

Artistic license....but it’s laudable that you pay such close attention to the text.

“Desperate” is one of many adjectives he richly earned that day and in the days following. He was the original cautionary tale.

I thinkt it was J Vernon McGee who pointed out that Baathsehba has to bear some of the fault for this ugly chapter in David’s reign since she no doubt knew that she was exposing herself to David’s view.
