Despite what anyone thinks about Pope Francis, no one should be under the illusion that the Roman Catholic church hasn't had psat instances of less than ideal Popes.

The Borgia family originally came from the Kingdom of Valencia, and rose to prominence during the mid-15th century; Cesare's great-uncle Alphonso Borgia (1378-1458), bishop of Valencia, was elected Pope Callixtus III in 1455. Cesare's father, Pope Alexander VI, was the first pope who openly recognized his children born out of wedlock.

This Borgia family example is not meant to justify Pope Francis' shortcomings but to suggest that other less than perfect men with questionable theology have served as Pope.

In any case, the gates of hell will not prevail against Christ's church. This we can be assured of.

Comparing Bergoglio to the Borgia popes is similar to comparing Adolf Hitler to LBJ.
