The Judgment of Satan

7 When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth—Gog and Magog—and to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore. 9 They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God’s people, the city he loves. But fire came down from heaven and devoured them. 10 And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. One of the most iconic record albums of the 1970's was The Allman Brothers' EAT A PEACH. The lead guitarist in the Band was the incredibly talented Dwayne Allman, who was tragically killed when a Peach Truck slammed into him as he was riding his motorcycle somewhere in Georgia. The Double Album, produced by the amazing Tommy Dowd, was Dwayne at the peak of his artistic life, two sides of which consists of total improvisation, and the other two sides some of the most famous Southern Rock songs ever recorded.

My late husband and I played the grooves off of this record. It got to the point that I had every note memorized, even in the 50 minute Jam on the two album sides. Yes. It was THAT good.

Anyway, widowhood, 3 Interstate moves, and 40 years later, I purchased a new stereo, and the time had come to rebuild my record collection from scratch (pun intended). Some records were easy to find. Others, like EAT A PEACH, were extremely rare. My sister found one in decent condition, but the cover was destroyed. I really wanted a nice cover too.

The local Record Guy told me a few months ago that EAT A PEACH was so iconic that it was going to be reissued on 180 gram thick vinyl and THREE (count 'em) BONUS TRACKS. He figured it might be about $30.00 when it came out, so I placed an order. Normally I prefer vintage vinyl, and $30.00 was above my ceiling for a record album, but EAT A PEACHwas special. Not only was it wonderful music, but it evoked the memory of a very precious time in my life.

And so, I waited. The release date kept changing with all the various excuses: Supply Chain Issues, Covid, Vinyl Shortage, Copyright Issues, etc etc etc. I told the Record Store Guy that I would pay $30.00 even for "Vintage, in not-so-great condition", but he said that every vintage one was long since snapped up or so damaged as to be unplayable.

And so, I waited. Months went by, but it finally arrived. Hurray! The Record Store Guy handed it to me, all shrink-wrapped, and HEAVY (two records of 180 gram vinyl, a heavy cardboard jacket and thick plastic archival inner-sleeves) with a price tag of $52.99. I was stunned. So was the Record Guy. He had expected it to be about $30.00, and now he was embarrassed. It seemed that the record was from a numbered, limited edition of only 500. That made it worth more money to collectors. The Music, however, is worth so much more than that. OK, so I bought it, and brought it home, but then I was afraid to open it. Like a New Car that loses value the minute you drive it off the lot, the record would lose its "value" the minute I removed the outer shrink-wrap. For days, it sat there, unopened, until just yesterday. Alone on Mother's Day, with Tippy the Dog at my side, I took a razor blade and carefully sliced the edge of the shrink-wrap and removed the two records. One was a peachy-pink color, and the other was baby blue. OK. I didn't mind that. But the labels on the records were not the famous WB/Capricorn Labels with the view of Hollywood Blvd. They were totally different labels. But it was still EAT A PEACH, and the music was more important than the color of the vinyl or the labels. And so, I carefully placed the needle in the groove.

Something was wrong! The songs were all there, but, in order to fit in the three bonus tracks, they had changed the order! The bonus tracks were good, but should have been placed at the very end of the double album set, because the Order of songs on an LP is as importantant as the songs themselves. It was like starting out Beethoven's Ninth with "Ode To Joy" and finishing it up with the first movement. EAT A PEACH is a whole unit, and should have been preserved as such. Anyone who did not memorize the original would never know the difference, but I DID.

Today's Scripture Reading is offensive to so many people that there have been attempts to remove such things from our Bible. The idea that there is a Satan, a Lake of Fire, or Hell upsets people so much that whole religions have been crafted to remove those concepts from the culture. Scholars cherry-pick verses, paraphrase, and rework the Scriptures to remove these ideas, and they have been at it for over 150 years. It only takes one generation to forget the "original", and if no copies exist, then the Truth only exists in our memories. As log as I have my memories intact, I will continue to sing the guitar solo from "Blue Skies" at the top of my lungs as I ride my Harley. And I will eat a peach in honor of one of the Greatest Southern Rock Bands that ever played. (Dwayne and Greg, RIP)
