Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Revelation 14

Harvesting the Earth and Trampling the Winepress

14 I looked, and there before me was a white cloud, and seated on the cloud was one like a son of man[b] with a crown of gold on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand. 15 Then another angel came out of the temple and called in a loud voice to him who was sitting on the cloud, “Take your sickle and reap, because the time to reap has come, for the harvest of the earth is ripe.” 16 So he who was seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested.

17 Another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle. 18 Still another angel, who had charge of the fire, came from the altar and called in a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, “Take your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of grapes from the earth’s vine, because its grapes are ripe.” 19 The angel swung his sickle on the earth, gathered its grapes and threw them into the great winepress of God’s wrath. 20 They were trampled in the winepress outside the city, and blood flowed out of the press, rising as high as the horses’ bridles for a distance of 1,600 stadia.[c]

Our Father in Heaven
Blessed be Your Holy Name!
You Alone Are Worthy of Worship and Praise,
For You Alone Are The One True God,
Omnipotent and Omniscient,
Holy and Righteous,
Full of Justice and Love.
You Alone are Our Strength and Our Song,
Our Refuge and Our High Tower,
Our Rock and Our Redeemer,
Our Sword and Our Shield!

Thank You, LORD,
For For Your Eternal Word.
Thank You For Assuring us,
That although weeping may endure for a night,
Joy comes in the Morning.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

Back in the 1950's, children in Public School were taught Patriotic Songs. In Kindergarten and First Grade, it was "My Country Tis of Thee". Well, I knew what "Pilgrim's Pride" was, as Dad had taken us to Plymouth, and I had seen Plymouth Rock and the Mayflower II already. I really hated the line "Land where my fathers died" because I loved my Dad and didn't want him to die! The teacher calmly explained that the song was talking about our Forefathers from long ago, not our Daddy! OK. That explained it. It was still a strange little song, and years later I found out that the tune was from England's National Anthem, "God Save the Queen".

In the Second Grade, we moved up to "America The Beautiful". I REALLY liked that song. I could see the amber waves of grain and purple mountains in my mind, though I had never visited the Great Plains or the Rocky Mountains. Boston's one big hill was Blue so I could imagine purple ones as well!

In the Third Grade, we learned the National Anthem. That one had some scary bits about ROCKETS. Rockets carried Atomic Bombs as far as I knew. And so I interpreted that, even if we are annihilated by Atomic Rockets, our Flag will still be there, because it was made of a special kind of cloth, like Superman's cape, that didn't burn. (It's crazy what kids think!)

The Fourth Grade had the most puzzling Patriotic Song of all. I memorized the lyrics but had no idea what they were talking about. The only time I had ever seen someone trampling grapes was in an "I Love Lucy" episode. (Lucy had gone to Italy, were she joined in with some barefoot grape-stompers, and it was hilarious). I couldn't picture THE LORD stomping grapes. It was just too weird! Years later, I learned that there was a book by John Steinbeck called "The Grapes of Wrath" which was made into a movie. I knew that Steinbeck got the line from "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" (the song with the grapes), but where did the songwriter (Julia Ward Howe) get it in the first place?

It all became clear the first time I read the Book of Revelation. It was from the Bible! Of course! Lots of songs used Passages from the Bible, because they were familiar to everybody 100 years ago. Even in the 1960's there were Biblical Passages slipped into lyrics ("The first one now will later be last"from Dylan's "The Times They Are a-Changing" and the lyrics to "All along the Watchtower" come to mind.) In Julia Ward Howe's time, during the American Civil War, Biblical references in song lyrics were even more common.

Since God has been banished from the Public Schools, I wonder if the teachers would be forbidden to teach these songs, even if they wanted to.

I would suggest though, that if the songs are taught, they should be accompanied by a little lesson on what the lyrics actually mean.
