Many breakups are instigated by one person who, to soften the blow, will speak just like the woman in the song: "She told him, 'You'll forget in time.'" Most of the time, the other person eventually does.
Only this guy doesn't forget. He says it in the very first line, sung by Jones with placid authority before the music even begins: "He said, 'I'll love you 'til I die.'" And he backs up his word.

There is a podcast by David Allen Coe’s son Tyler Mahan called “Cocaine and Rhinestones.” Season 2 is about George Jones. Well worth watching.
But as you can see with the Biblical analogies and extension of the story line, he loved her so much that he couldn't bear to stay dead for long.
I mean seriously, when there's a will there's a Way. Roy Orbison knew, but his song was lost until his sons found it on an old cassette, and brought it to life.
While they could only do so much to repair the sound and overcome the poor condition of the tape, I think they actually created something better that Roy ever intended.
That's because the goal of his sons was to be able to play together with him. The haunting, scratchy voice of Roy was resurrected by his sons *because* the way is love.
They brought their father back to life.
When there's a will there's a way. And it goes a long way in explaining why the dark side has been desperately trying to redefine love as a depravity free-for-all. They are out to corrupt the meaning to the point where love becomes as defiled and unwelcome as the rainbow for all of its forced associations with perversion and hedonism in general.
