Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Revelation 10
The Angel and the Little Scroll
10 Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven. He was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow above his head; his face was like the sun, and his legs were like fiery pillars. 2 He was holding a little scroll, which lay open in his hand. He planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land, 3 and he gave a loud shout like the roar of a lion. When he shouted, the voices of the seven thunders spoke. 4 And when the seven thunders spoke, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from heaven say, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said and do not write it down.”
5 Then the angel I had seen standing on the sea and on the land raised his right hand to heaven. 6 And he swore by him who lives for ever and ever, who created the heavens and all that is in them, the earth and all that is in it, and the sea and all that is in it, and said, “There will be no more delay! 7 But in the days when the seventh angel is about to sound his trumpet, the mystery of God will be accomplished, just as he announced to his servants the prophets.”
8 Then the voice that I had heard from heaven spoke to me once more: “Go, take the scroll that lies open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.”
9 So I went to the angel and asked him to give me the little scroll. He said to me, “Take it and eat it. It will turn your stomach sour, but ‘in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.’[a]” 10 I took the little scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it. It tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour. 11 Then I was told, “You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, languages and kings.”

I love Yoghurt-Covered Raisins. I thought I had hit the jackpot when I saw a large bag of them for only $5.99, because they are usually quite expensive. I opened the bag and started gobbling them up. They seemed a little sweeter than usual, and suddenly I felt sick to my stomach. I stopped gobbling and looked at the ingredients. There were neither dairy products, yoghurt cultures, cane sugar, or natural flavorings in the coating. The only things real were the raisins, but they were thinkly coated in an unpronounceable chemical slurry that tasted like yoghurt, but wasn't. I threw the nearly full bag into the trash, even though I still craved the sweet taste of the fake yoghurt!
In a Monty Python sketch from the 1970's, Mrs. Premise says to Mrs. Conclusion: "I wouldn't want to know everything. It would take all the mystery out of life." I tend to agree. There is so much I don't know, which leaves so much to learn and discover.
In my preparation for Today's Reading, I found many websites that claimed to "know" what was in the Little Scroll that John is told to eat. And yet, the Angel tells John NOT to write down what he hears in the Thunder, or exactly WHAT is in the Little Scroll. It is a similar admonition given to Daniel, when the Angel tells him to "seal up these things till the time of the end." The different schools of interpretation seemed determined to expose what God meant to be kept secret until the time is right. I will not presume to do that. It's clear, however, that the contents of the scroll tasted sweet in John's mouth, but gave him indigestion by the time it reached his stomach. Like the chemical yoghurt flavor, the secret ingredients were unpronoucable and mysterious. It tasted sweet in John's mouth, but by the time he had ingested it, it gave him a sour stomach.
Modern-Day Religious Leaders have tried to artificially sugar-coat the Word of God to make it palatable to "progressives" and conform to the world. Certain Passages in the Bible which refer to various sins are mistranslated and twisted in order to appease certain groups of people. I have seen some real doozies over the years, mostly concerning gender roles and sexual sin. The deliberate mistranslation and misinterpretation of the original languages in order to seem "Tolerant" is a sin in and of itself!
Now, with regard to Prayer, which is what this whole series is all about, let us look at the whole chapter. Some things that happen in Prayer are between You and God. Like the Thunders, these personal revelations are for you alone, or at least meant to be held safely by you until God tells you to share them. We are not to announce "God told me this, God told me that, God told me to tell YOU to do this and that" unless we are REALLY sure that God wants us to share it. It is like the private conversation between a man and his wife. There are some things we just don't share and are personal treasures.
On the other hand, we are called to always share the Word of God, even if it sometimes gets us into trouble. Correcting a Sinner, Confronting Evil, Standing for Truth, and Preaching the Word are sweet in our mouth, but sometimes can cause a great deal of personal distress. It's enough to give you indigestion.
Unlike the fake Yoghurt though, it is The Real Thing.

Psalm 41
To the leader. A Psalm of David.
1 Happy are those who consider the poor;*
the Lord delivers them in the day of trouble.
2 The Lord protects them and keeps them alive;
they are called happy in the land.
You do not give them up to the will of their enemies.
3 The Lord sustains them on their sickbed;
in their illness you heal all their infirmities.*
4 As for me, I said, ‘O Lord, be gracious to me;
heal me, for I have sinned against you.’
5 My enemies wonder in malice
when I will die, and my name perish.
6 And when they come to see me, they utter empty words,
while their hearts gather mischief;
when they go out, they tell it abroad.
7 All who hate me whisper together about me;
they imagine the worst for me.
8 They think that a deadly thing has fastened on me,
that I will not rise again from where I lie.
9 Even my bosom friend in whom I trusted,
who ate of my bread, has lifted the heel against me.
10 But you, O Lord, be gracious to me,
and raise me up, that I may repay them.
11 By this I know that you are pleased with me;
because my enemy has not triumphed over me.
12 But you have upheld me because of my integrity,
and set me in your presence for ever.
13 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.Amen and Amen.
