It’s beauty is unmatched.
I have seen it several times in St. Peter’s.
Each time I am overwhelmed.

It amazes me that folks like him could imagine such beauty in a filthy world of swirling stench, crap and disease.

Not for nothing,, It doesn't follow that Michelangelo would have been mocked for vanity... if of all his lifes work he only signed ONE piece of art. A vain person would make sure to sign everything...
And if I hold my left hand just like Pieta Mary's hand, the crease folds of my palm also form a visible letter "M" as well- so I don't think that's verifiable evidence of a personal sort of inscription...
Now he did paint himself into paintings, that is true- but he also painted others, contemporaries of his back in the day, into his paintings as well- some flattering, others not so much...
Genius, no doubt though.

I wonder, as people just don't realize hiw bad the Catholic and Protestant relationship was back then..

Kennedy wasn't President anymore, so Vatican involvement
would have been less obtrusive I would think-
I would never come to know much of my mother's side of the family - as they pretty much disowned my mother after she married a Catholic man back then.
and not the my fathers Catholic family were overjoyed with his choice either. So there was tension on that front for sure... And maybe "Outcry" was a little sensationalized intention as well to sell tickets!...
Though, If you ever do get a chance to visit Rome... 😉

I saw it too. It was beautiful.

I was able to enlarge it enough on my iPad to make out the article.

Apparently it was set in a sterile looking room with harsh blue lights and people thought the overall effect did nothing positive for the sculpture.

Plus, they had a slow moving beltway that took people past to keep the crowds moving, which I honestly could see the need for. I have no doubt some people would linger there for hours tying up the exhibit otherwise.

thought it might be something a bit more "juicier" back then...

I guess I can understand though- one can get excited to see something- then be flatly disappointed...
I had that going through the Louvre some years ago...
Started out good, building up anticipation to see the Mona Lisa -
then- ugh..let down.
Standing 25 feet away, jostling in a crowd to see a small picture on the wall - what a bust...
not a highlight, to be sure.
