Nan’s father, Congressman ‘Big Tom’ D’Alessandro had enough clout to stand up to FDR over his ignoring Jews being murdered in Europe during WW2. Presumably a favor to his business assiciates.
He was also mayor and ran for governor but had to drop out after it was determined he received undeclared campaign money from a parking garage owner who had been convicted of several crimes like fraud, etc.
