Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

1 Timothy 2

Instructions on Worship

2 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time. 7 And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying—and a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles.

In the City of Quincy, just South of Boston, there are a lot of Asian People. I would venture to say that the best Asian Restaurants in New England are in Quincy: Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Thai, Korean, Mongolian Hot Pot, Indian, Hunan, Sichuan, Cantonese, you name it. In fact, other Asian Restaurants in New England send busses and vans to Quincy every morning and evening to pick up their employees and bring them to work in such diverse cities as Worcester, Milford, and Springfield. I guess part of the ambiance of an Asian Restaurant is to have Asian Employees!

Along with the venerable old granite churches of Quincy (One of which contains the mortal remains of two Presidents), there are a number of Buddhist Temples and Shrines, and the home landscapes have a distinctly Asian flavor. Little footbridges, gravel paths, concrete Japanese lanterns, and religious stautuary all add to the effect. And, of course, the local Home Depot carries a slightly different style of Lawn Ornaments and decor to accomadate the new, hardworking, homeowners.

One thing I noticed in Quincy, as well as in Florida, was the proliferation of various "prayer machines". These could be anything from little flags, wind chimes, or cylinders turning on spindles, to mobile sculptures that move in the breeze. The belief is that these items have prayers enclosed in them, and the wind's movement sends the prayers to heaven.

Lest you think I am being dismissive of these "mechanical" means of prayer, let me remind you that you are reading this on a computer or smart phone right now. I have stuffed slips of paper between the stones of the Western Wall, and many of us use a Daily Devotional either in print form or online. So it's not only "HOW" one is praying, but to "WHOM".

We have looked at Prayer all through the Bible, from Genesis to the Present Thread, and I think it is safe to say that the the majority of verses about prayer are about "HOW" to Pray, not "WHAT" to Pray. In Today's Passage of Scripture, Paul also talks about to "WHOM" we should pray. Along with the instructions containing the categories of prayer, (petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving), Paul also gives us insight into the Character of God (God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.). Then Paul speaks of the Exclusivity of Christ: For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people.

Any other prayers to any other god are just flapping in the wind.
