Pope Francis Cancels Ash Wednesday Mass, Trip to Florence Due to Knee Pain

The Vatican announced Friday that Pope Francis will no longer attend an international meeting of bishops and mayors in Florence, Italy, on Sunday due to doctor-ordered rest for knee pain.

The pope will also not be able to participate in the customary procession on Rome’s Aventine Hill and Mass at the Basilica of Santa Sabina for Ash Wednesday on March 2, according to the Vatican.

“Due to acute gonalgia, for which his doctor has prescribed a period of more rest for his leg, Pope Francis will not be able to travel to Florence on Sunday, Feb. 27, or preside over Ash Wednesday celebrations on March 2,” the Holy See press office said in a short statement on Feb. 25.

The statement did not address whether the pope would preside over the Sunday Angelus at the Vatican or at his Wednesday general audience.

The Vatican also announced the program of Pope Francis’ two-day visit to Malta on Friday. The trip is scheduled for April 2-3.

The Pope just visited the Russian Embassy — because the Pope cares about politics.

The Pope cancels his Ash Wednesday trip — because who really cares about that lame church stuff?

Many find Pope Marx to be a PITA.

Things may be rounding out.

Well, this explains why this pope says the things he says and thinks the way he thinks: He gets stiff in the joints.

I looked up the gonalgia which is hurting him.
It said: [ gō-năl′jə ] n. Pain in the knee.

So pain in the knee’s underlying cause is pain in the knee. Okay.

My knees hurt often, too. My best wishes to Pope Francis.

Although I strongly disagree with him politically and want him to retire——yesterday.

Maybe he should call Joy Behar to do it.

“Sounds like an excuse to me.”

Agreed. They’re lying. In the space of 3-4 days, he’s canceled trips to Malta and Florence... and now he’s scrapped Ash Wednesday. This is soomething more than a gimpy knee. Something is very wrong with Bergoglio’s physical health. (Ditto his mental health, but that’s nothing new).

It’s not like Ash Wednesday is some second rate holy day in Catholicism.

Even if his knee was legitimately bad, he could make an appearance on a scooter or in a wheelchair. It would garner a lot of sympathy for him at that point and be good optics.

Snubbing Ash Wednesday is almost like spitting in Catholicism’s face.

As a catholic grade school kid from the fifties - if I said my knee hurt - the nuns would have told me to offer it up for the souls in purgatory.
It isn’t like the sumbitch has to walk anywhere.
They carry his sorry ass around.

I remember St John Paul II’s final homily, he was in so much pain couldn’t even speak, and had to stop, it was so sad.

I am sitting here shocked and amazed that The Pope cannot kneel in prayer.   Full disclosure, I'm not Roman Catholic but even with my hip pain I can still kneel.

"In nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti."   But wait, The Pope doesn't want anyone to speak latin.

“the nuns would have told me to offer it up for the souls in purgatory.”

It’s amazing how few Catholics the past 50 years have even heard of the concept of offering up sufferings. It’s like a different, new religion is being preached.
