Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Ephesians 6
The Armor of God
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. 19 Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.]

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father in Heaven,
Blessed Are You,
Oh LORD,
Our God,
King of The Universe
You Alone Are Worthy,
You Alone Are LORD,
You Alone Are The One True God.
Omnipotent, Omniscient,
and Omnipresent,
There is No One Like You.
Your Name is Holy,
Blessed,
and Hallowed.
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Yesterday, I promised I would share how I was able to teach Jazz Piano to a Blind Former FBI Agent who had been involved in the investigation of the NYC Mob. This may be a little bit of "Inside Baseball" to folks who are not into Music Theory, but there WILL be a connection to our Bible Study at the end. I PROMISE!
Jazz, and indeed all of Western Music, is based upon three elements: Melody, Rhythm, and Harmony. Melody and Rhythm are obvious. Jimmy could already pick out the tunes of his favorite Jazz Standards on the piano. Rhythm was also pretty easy. It was the HARMONY where we got bogged down. Usually I taught Harmony visually, deftly drawing a chart called "The Circle of Fifths", and placing the chord progressions on the circle, as if on the face of a clock. This wasn't going to work with a blind person. I had to come up with some kind of chart that Jimmy could visualize in his head, and understand which chords resolved to which, as "Chord Resolution" is the Key to Western Harmony. Then it dawned on me! At the various trials of the Mob, the FBI had presented flow charts of who answered to whom in the "Family". And so, I improvised, as any Jazz Musician is supposed to do. Here we go:
There are Seven Chords in the Diatonic Chord Family. They have a heirachy and "answer to" (resolve) to specific chords in the family.
The First Chord is The Tonic Chord. This is the BOSS. The "Capo del Tutti Capi". He is the one who gives the Scale it's name (for example, the Tonic in the key of C Major is the C Major Chord) Everything eventually answers (resolves) to him.
The FIVE CHORD (Dominant) Five notes up from the Tonic is the FIVE Chord. This is the "Underboss". The Underboss reports directly to the Boss. It has a sound that dominates one's ears and nearly forces your mind back to the Tonic. If you look at nearly any pop standard, you will see that the second-to-last chard is almost always the FIVE Chord, which directs you back to the Tonic. This is called "Chord Resolution".
The FOUR Chord (Sub-Dominant) The Four Chord is located just under the Dominant, and therefore is called the "Sub-Dominant". He is the "Consiglieri". He answers directly to the Underboss, who then resolves to the Boss. Sometimes the Four Chord goes directly to the Boss, but it is not as "satisfying" a resolution bypassing the Underboss. In fact, in Music Theory,the "4 to 1" is called a "Plagial" or "Incomplete" Cadence.
The 2m, 3m, and 6m Chords These are all weaker chords and have to go through either the Consiglieri or the Underboss to resolve. I used the analogy of Street Captains for these chords.
The SEVEN CHORD (Fredo) The Seventh chord in the sequence is called a "Diminished" Chord due to its structure. This is Fredo. He keeps getting passed over, and is even referred to as a "passing chord". He doesn't even appear on the Circle of Fifths, but he's Family, so we give him little jobs to do.
Jimmy GOT it right away, and from that point onward was improvising over Chord Progressions like a Pro.
Now, let's look at Today's Passage in Ephesians. Paul had some deep Spiritual Truths he needed to convey.. The spiritual life of the City of Ephesus did not offer any kind of example that he could use to teach the principles of Christian Life. The syncretism of Roman, Jewish, Greek, Egyptian, Barbarian, Cults, and Mystery Religions in Ephesus had nothing to compare. Paul was not just adding to the pile of cults that already existed. He was speaking of a total revolution. While he could have used current religious terms to "pick out the melody" of Christianity, something else was required to adequately descibe a Christian's Walk.
There was one thing that was a constant in Ephesus no matter what religion one practiced. That was the fact that, at the time, the whole known world was under the rule of Rome. The Roman Soldier was a common sight in Ephesus, Jerusalem, Athens, Antioch, Alexandria, and Damascus. To this day, no Passion Play or "Jesus Movie" is complete without the familiar uniform of the Roman Soldier. (My little sisters used to joke about the "O-Cedar Brooms on their helmets in such movies as "Ben Hur" or "The Greatest Story Ever Told".) Everybody recognized the armor down to the very shoes that were worn.
And so, drawing from something that the people knew by heart, Paul was able to discuss such esoteric "Inside Baseball" terms as Salvation, Righteousness, Faith, Truth, Gospel of Peace, and The Word of God by comparing those abstract principles to the very real and familiar armor of the Roman Soldier.
Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)
God Bless America.

Psalm 36
To the leader. Of David, the servant of the Lord.
1 Transgression speaks to the wicked
deep in their hearts;
there is no fear of God
before their eyes.
2 For they flatter themselves in their own eyes
that their iniquity cannot be found out and hated.
3 The words of their mouths are mischief and deceit;
they have ceased to act wisely and do good.
4 They plot mischief while on their beds;
they are set on a way that is not good;
they do not reject evil.
5 Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the clouds.
6 Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,
your judgements are like the great deep;
you save humans and animals alike, O Lord.
7 How precious is your steadfast love, O God!
All people may take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
8 They feast on the abundance of your house,
and you give them drink from the river of your delights.
9 For with you is the fountain of life;
in your light we see light.
10 O continue your steadfast love to those who know you,
and your salvation to the upright of heart!
11 Do not let the foot of the arrogant tread on me,
or the hand of the wicked drive me away.
12 There the evildoers lie prostrate;
they are thrust down, unable to rise.

Lord ,
We come to you as Israels new leadership is making decisions and determining their position regarding the war cries abroad. We know these are difficult times over there and the pressures are great. So we ask that you direct their decisions according to your will...and your purposes now and for the outcomes that will be on the World Stage.
In your name,
Amen
