Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Ephesians 6

The Armor of God

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. 19 Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

I heard him before I saw him. The skinny youth in nothing but basketball shorts, a T-shirt, and flip-flops on his feet, came hot-dogging between the cars on State Road 7 on a Kawasaki racing bike at the red light at Hillsborough Avenue. Luckily, he was the only one moving, or else he would have been toast. Suddenly, a gust of wind picked up the loose basketball shorts and exposed the youth's buttocks for all to see. At the front of the line of cars, he had to stop his motorcycle and pull his pants up! Hilarity ensued. How humiliating!

Anyone who has been reading this thread for any length of time knows that I am an avid Motorcyclist. In fact, 2022 marks two milestones. My antique Harley will be 30 years old in June , and in October, I will be celebrating my 50th Anniversary on two wheels. In those 50 years I have seen the loss of many fellow riders. Usually the crashes were caused by other drivers, but sometimes it was their own fault for improper safety equipment or riding while impaired.

In Massachusetts, Helmets, Eyewear, Proper Footwear, and Safety Inspections are mandatory. In Florida, there were no such mandates. Now, I am NOT in favor of Mandates, but a little common sense goes a long way. I always wore my helmet, sports eyeglasses, and sturdy shoes in Florida, and Pastor Jerry(RIP) made sure my Bike was working properly (he once tore down both cylinders and replaced all the gaskets for me!), and we all wore our leathers even in the hottest weather (how else could we show our colors?), even though none of it was mandated. Our helmets became a kind of statement, being the surface for all kinds of stickers with all kinds of meassgaes. Leather gloves were also a good idea, especialy for us musicians. I can't imagine riding in basketball shorts and flip-flops!

The world is a dangerous place, even without cars and motorcycles. Paul tells us that our Battle is Spiritual, and he uses the Armor and Equipment of a soldier to describe how we are to pray.

Like a Biker's Helmet, the Helmet of Salvation protects your head. That's where your brain is located. The mind is easily attacked by ugly thoughts, doubts, fears, phobia, and obsessions. Ancient helmets came with visors (eye protection) and came down over the ears. The eyes and the ears are the gates through which temptation enters the mind. Out on the road, the roar of traffic is often noisier than the engine, and there's a lot of dust flying around, so a good helmet protects these "gates" as well. The Helmet of Salvation spoken of by Paul protects our MIND with the Blessed Assurance of God's Promise. The Salvation paid for by Jesus's Death and Ressurection is our "Helmet" and gives us the authority to banish the ugly thoughts and obsessions.

Paul speaks of other equipment, and all of it can be compared to Spiritual Warfare. Tomorrow we will talk about another piece of armor, as we look at them one by one.
