Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem
Acts 17
In Berea 10 As soon as it was night, the believers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue. 11 Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. 12 As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem
Oh LORD,
Our God,
How Excellent is Your name Over All The Earth!
Blessed Are You, King of The Universe,
And Sanctified is Your Most Holy Name!
How Happy we are to be called of You,
To Come into Your House With Singing and Praise,
To Exalt Your Name Together, Forever!
We Seek You, and Find You,
And You Deliver Us From Our Fears.
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem
On the flickering black & white TV screen, the commercial for the religion whose Mother Church is in Boston intoned:
"Jesus said, 'It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness'"
Well, I thought that was a very cool thing to say, so this Jesus must have been very wise indeed. How come I had never heard that before? I went to Church and Sunday School every week. You would think that somebody would have brought this up! Years passed, and I examined other spiritual "options". Nothing seemed to work, but it was the 1960's and my generation would try anything.
At the age of 28, I was Born Again, and received my first Bible. It was the New American Standard Translation, which I still love. I read the entire New Testament in less than a week, and didn't find that verse about the candle. A friend gave me a twenty-pound book called "Strong's Exhaustive Concordance". I tried every key word in the phrase in both Greek and Hebrew and came up with nothing. I finally came to the conclusion that the phrase was not in the Bible at all, Jesus never said it, and the TV commercial was lying. Now, this morning, with the Internet, I have finally found the origin of the phrase. Here goes:
Quote Investigator: The earliest appearance located by QI occurred in a 1907 collection titled “The Supreme Conquest and Other Sermons Preached in America” by William L. Watkinson. A sermon titled “The Invincible Strategy” downplayed the value of verbal attacks on undesirable behaviors and championed the importance of performing good works. Emphasis added to excerpts by QI:[1]
But denunciatory rhetoric is so much easier and cheaper than good works, and proves a popular temptation. Yet is it far better to light the candle than to curse the darkness.
In September 1907 Watkinson’s sermon “The Invincible Strategy” was reprinted in a periodical called “China’s Millions” which was published by a Protestant Christian missionary society based in China.[2]
Thus, the expression was disseminated to a group of people in China. Nowadays, the words are sometimes ascribed to Confucius or labeled a Chinese proverb, but QI has not found compelling evidence to support that assignment. (Quote Investigator.com)
The site also says that this saying has been attributed to Confucius, JFK, Adlai Stevenson, and a host of others.
Back when I received my first Bible, we had to rely on ponderous works like STRONG'S in order to verify what a preacher was saying. We didn't have Quote Investigator, Snopes, Fact Checkers, or even the Internet. The Bereans were even more restricted. If they had a copy of the Scriptures at all, it would have been on parchment, hand-written, and in the form of a scroll. The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls shed a great deal of light onto what was available in those days. The First Five Books (The Torah) would prabably be one big scroll, and all the Prophets, Poetry, and History would be separate scrolls. The Book of Esther is a little scroll (called a "Megillah") and is read all the way through every year at Purim. The Torah was so precious, it was kept under lock and key. Isaiah got its own scroll, and there was a beautifully preserved one among the Dead Sea Scrolls that reads exactly like the Isaiah we read today, in Hebrew, of course.
And so, the Bereans didn't just go home and "google" Paul's sermon to make sure he was Scripturally accurate. They had to perhaps open up a precious possession kept in a box at home, go to a library, or spend time in the synagogue looking through their copies. This is why Luke, the author of the Book of Acts, calls the Bereans "Noble". It was truly a noble endeavor to compare Paul's preaching to the Scriptures. In fact, any time somebody presents a spiritual "truth" to us, it is incumbant upon us to check it with the Scriptures. With all the tools available to us, we have it easy these days!

Psalm 32
Of David. A Maskil.
1 Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered.
2 Happy are those to whom the Lord imputes no iniquity,
and in whose spirit there is no deceit.
3 While I kept silence, my body wasted away
through my groaning all day long.
4 For day and night your hand was heavy upon me;
my strength was dried up* as by the heat of summer.
Selah
5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you,
and I did not hide my iniquity;
I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord’,
and you forgave the guilt of my sin.
Selah
6 Therefore let all who are faithful
offer prayer to you;
at a time of distress,* the rush of mighty waters
shall not reach them.
7 You are a hiding-place for me;
you preserve me from trouble;
you surround me with glad cries of deliverance.
Selah
8 I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go;
I will counsel you with my eye upon you.
9 Do not be like a horse or a mule, without understanding,
whose temper must be curbed with bit and bridle,
else it will not stay near you.
10 Many are the torments of the wicked,
but steadfast love surrounds those who trust in the Lord.
11 Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, O righteous,
and shout for joy, all you upright in heart.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM! And for the Preservation of the Valiant Israeli Nation!
"Paul Preaching in Berea" |
|
| _ | the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. |
Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.
