The Archdiocese of Miami is now requiring everyone to wear a mask while attending Mass, as tens of thousands of new COVID cases are reported in Florida every day.
The change went into effect on Tuesday and affects all Mass and church gathering attendees, regardless of vaccination status, the Archdiocese said in a statement Wednesday.
The decision to once again require masks at the 109 parishes in the Archdiocese of Miami was made after seeing the proliferation of cases, said Mary Ross Agosta, a spokeswoman for the archdiocese.
“We need to be cautious and we need to be proactive,” she said, noting that proper social distancing is still recommended. “We believe that wearing a mask and social distancing can help prevent the spread.”

I went to a Tridentine (Latin) Mass in Lantana, Florida today. Probably 150 people, only a handful wore masks.
At most Masses, regardless of the time, the older people far outnumber the younger. Today I was heartened to see young couples with lots of kids, teens, all nationalities. I hope Francis’ discouragement of the reverent Tridentine Mass backfires...looks like it is.
My church would welcome them.
We have many such people.
Thank God.
We bought this BS in 2020 - I have let my Pastor know we are not buying it in 2022.
The communist atheist County executive where my church is located just instituted a mask mandate.
So of course they went along with it.
I won’t be attending with a mask.
Wenski started off okay…but now he’s knocking himself out trying to prove that he’s an FOF (Friend of Francis). And Francis is all about vaxes and masks or whatever the state tells him to do.
The Tridentine masses are generally much freer and more normal - we’re already in trouble just for going, LOL! - and where I live (Jacksonville) the crowd grows every week. Not only young people, but men and black people and people of all ethnic groups.
We’re getting a new bishop for the Diocese of St. Augustine fairly soon (don’t know who it is) and I hope he does what our current one does, which is to let the TLMs quietly continue and turn a blind eye. Some of our best priests here celebrate the TLM and the communities are very good, with TLM folks being active in a lot of diocesan activities (pro-life, charitable, etc.) with everybody else.
But you never know what a new bishop is going to do, especially one appointed in these times under Francis.
They preach about sin. Fearfulness is a sin
Agreed. Fool me once...
The Catholic church is full of weak, feminized men in leadership.
Here in NJ they are begging people to return; churches that had been half empty are now three quarters empty (and the attendance issues pre-date COVID). I doubt we’ll ever close them again, even if the Black Plague appears. The leadership should have resisted closing in 2020; they’ve sped up the decline.
