Here’s a tradition/Kabbalistic mind-bender for you. G-d created the sun and stars later in the week. So what was the “light” that was created on this day?
He created the photon, the essential particle of light, as He also created the Laws of Physics for the basic particles, electrons, protons, neutrons, etc., to operate under....................
In verse two He directs our attention to the Spirit at the earth's surface: we are to view subsequent events from there, looking upward.
God told Job He had darkened the earth's surface with an impenetrable cloud layer. Now, He is thinning those clouds to let there be light at the surface; He will need it to enable photosynthesis soon.
"Electromagnetic radiation", as another poster called it (i.e. LIGHT). Matter (sun and stars) came later as the created "Big Bang" "cooled off".
