The Greatest Story Ever Told

The Greatest Story Ever Told is a 1965 American epic film produced and directed by George Stevens. It is a retelling of the Biblical account about Jesus of Nazareth, from the Nativity through to the Ascension. Along with the ensemble cast, it is Claude Rains' final film role.

(Claude Rains as Herod the Great)

Matthew 2

18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.
19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
20 Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life.

A Hebrew equivalent to dream on is... literally, you’re living in a movie. It can be used not only as a refusal of an offer, but also as a way of giving the person you’re speaking with a reality check – get real.

How to say "dream on" in Hebrew

William Claude Rains (10 November 1889 – 30 May 1967) was a British actor whose career spanned almost seven decades.

Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life:

On June 7, 1967, IDF paratroopers advanced through the Old City toward the Temple Mount and the Western Wall, bringing Jerusalem’s holiest site under Jewish control for the first time in 2000 years.

I highly recommend “The Chosen”. My new favorite media presentation of The Gospel of Christ. Like nothing I’ve ever seen before.

Please, is that not the "Gospel" everyone has already decided as what they expect to hear?

If God's magnum opus Messiah were the one that human religious consensus has agreed to expect -- wow factor productions and all -- the world would burn down in an hideous, raging inferno.

As I've posted before, the same is true today as in NT times -- the Messiah arrives as the Maverick anti-establishment solution to business. He knows how to heal people directly, for real, cutting right through the Red Sea er tape. So full of love and patience and compassion!

God bless him so he can show the way up and out of Egypt, the house of bondage. If he believed the settled doctrines, he'd never recognize himself.

Nothing personal, I just need to get this out there. Time is short.

The raising of Lazarus in “The Greatest Story Ever Told” is one of the most epic scenes involving Christ I have ever seen.

It’s not a “story”. It’s history.

It's a story in that it is a recounting of factual events, such as a news story.

Tell me the story of Jesus,
Write on my heart every word.
Tell me the story most precious,
Sweetest that ever was heard.

John Wayne played a Roman soldier and had one line: “truly, this man was the son of God.”

What's weird/funny is that Charlton Heston (Moses) played John the Baptist:

Matthew 11

12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.
15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Heh, like living in a movie.

Unfortunately the projected ‘Eternal Soldier’ starting JW as the title character who becomes immortal after Jesus’s blood splashes him after striking Jesus with the Roman’s javelin to keep Jesus’s legs from being broken. In appreciation for the unexpected act of common humanity Jesus grants the soldier immortality until ‘Next we meet’ ie, at the end of time. There follows a string of historical battle vignette s with Wayne always a battered but through going professional with a persistent spark of humanity in his character. Some vignette s are even hilarious as at the Battle of Pavia where he is the unknown Spanish infantryman who dehorses and captures the tall beautifully turned out foppish King of France who has meltdown upon finding out the lowly rank of his captor. The end is somberly ambiguous as on a battlefield in the near future somewhere in the Middle East Wayne is very scarred and weary infantry master sergeant who is a company first sergeant. Clearly this is WW3 with the Soviets. The company are in their fighting positions and the horizon is lit flash’s and thunderous detentions continuously reverberate. The young captain says that this might the end of world and says might be but it has been a power of time coming. The captain gives him a strange look. Wayne asks if he might have a private minute to pray. The captain says surely but he didn’t figure his first sgt
as a religious man. Not religious Wayne says but a praying man. He mentions a previous commander named Jackson taught the true importance of prayer for a soldier. Then he reaches inside his shirt and extracts a battered medallion (the viewer realized this the same St George medallion he is shown praying with on the bloddy day of Angincourt as one of the Bowman of Old England. Wayne kneels on one knee and all we hear are the words “Master, for a mortal such as it has been a long time..... That is all, the pans up on the dark and stormy sky. This film was not made as it was felt to be to depressing.

As much as I love the chosen series, I didn’t care for the Christmas special simply because it was an hour and 15 minutes of music of a genre that I didn’t care for. And it was 100% lip-syncing. Now once the music was over and the movie begin, I did like that part a great deal. :)

“it is Claude Rains’ final film role”

Funny. I didn’t remember seeing* him in it.

*One of Claude Rains’ most famous roles was “The Invisible Man.”

I heard it relayed that if Jesus only said “come forth” without preceding it with “Lazarus,” all of the dead would have risen. So it didn’t become a zombie movie.
