John 17

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

6 “I have revealed you[a] to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8 For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9 I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of[b] your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by[c] that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.

13 “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by[d] the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.

of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

In the 16 years I spent in Florida, I taught hundreds of students. Some of them only took music lessons because the family had a new piano. Some of them squeezed music lessons in between School, Soccer, Gymnastics, Karate, Horseback-Riding, and other programmed activities. Of these, there were some that showed great progress, only to lose interest when a new activity arose. Others stuck with it and became good musicians.

A few actually formed bands and others went into music as a profession. One day, in an idle moment at the computer, I did a search on my own name. I found my own defunct websites, my CD on YT, and the resume of a former student. He was the Music Director at a Christian College, and credited me as his first Vocal Teacher long ago when he was still a "Boy Soprano". He said that I had taught him, not only Vocal Technique, but to LOVE MUSIC. I was so touched! I sent an email thanking him for remembering me.

In this next section of Jesus's Prayer, He prays for His Disciples. Jesus has been teaching them for three years, and would be leaving them soon. He knew that they would be facing hardship and even martyrdom. This is an "Imparting Prayer", as Jesus prays to the Father that the Disciples will be filled with the Holy Spirit has they go forward with the Good News of Salvation.

Teachers and Mentors have an enormous resposibility. In our own lives we encounter dozens of teachers, and have vivid memories of those that were wonderful, and those who were awful. Some of them still inhabit our nightmares, even after more than half a century! (My Mom's Sixth-Grade Teacher was like that!)

As Jesus prays for His Disciples, He is "sending them forth." That is when they become "Apostles", meaning "Those who are sent out". He is imparting them with a mission and will be sending them Another Comforter Who will equip them for the Job.

And the world will never forget their names or the Name of The One Who sent them.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
