Report: Hundreds of Sex Abuse Lawsuits Filed Against New Jersey Catholic Priests During 2-Year Window
Catholic News Agency ^ | 12/3/21 | Joe Bukuras

At least 820 sex abuse lawsuits have been filed against New Jersey’s Catholic dioceses and religious orders in the past two years — including some 180 in the past month alone, according to an analysis by news outlet NorthJersey.com.

About 250 of the lawsuits, representing 30% of the total, involved priests, with religious sisters and lay church employees also named as abusers, the analysis showed.

The flood of civil complaints came during a two-year period New Jersey provided under the 2019 Child Victims Act to allow victims who otherwise would have been barred by the state’s statute of limitation to file lawsuits. The two-year “lookback” window closed on Nov. 30.

More than 1,200 lawsuits were filed in all. About two-thirds of these were filed against Catholic dioceses and religious orders.

Among the findings by NorthJersey.com:

* The Archdiocese of Newark, the largest of New Jersey’s five Catholic dioceses, accounted for the most abuse lawsuits, with 432.

* The Diocese of Trenton had the next highest total, with 182 suits, followed by the Diocese of Paterson with 85. The Diocese of Metuchen was named in 70 lawsuits, and the Camden Diocese had 54.

* The Order or St. Benedict of New Jersey, which runs the local Delbarton school in Morristown, was the most sued among New Jersey’s religious orders, with 36 suits and another case pending.

As a Catholic, I want these men prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
As a thinking rational person who know the MSM lies, I’ve done my own research and learned that children are WAY more likely to be abused by a family member or teacher, and that Priests are no more likely to abuse children than are any other type of clergy (Protestant, Jewish, Islamic, whatever).
Those are hard facts, which those not yet red-pilled need to go do their own research on so they stop buying the myth that Priests are the only people who abuse children.

Priest are the only ones that go by ‘father’ …. You all think the Heavenly Father views pervert priest coming in His name are judged the same as the other perverts? Now who does Saint Peter say gets judged first?

“… so they stop buying the myth that Priests are the only people who
abuse children. “

~~~~~~~
I am not aware such a myth exists?
People who abuse children, Minor Attracted Persons, etc, are going to
infiltrate institutions where they can satisfy their appetites.
None are any more immune to that than the Boy Scouts were.
[They] endeavor to be where your children are.
( They also like to make themselves the controlling majority in their chosen
institutions over time. Safer for them that way. )
Someone having a web site doesn’t change the crime stats. You are more likely to be abused by someone you and your family know and trust (including friends, teachers and GASP family) than by an outsider, and other religious leaders are JUST as likely to abuse as priests are. You honestly don’t think imams diddle kids?! Rabbis and ministers do it too. This was never a catholic issue, this was a leftists hate the catholic church so pretend it was a catholic issue. You know the left lies, yet on this one issue you buy into their lies. And again, THAT SAID, if ANYONE does this then prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.
It has been going on more than 4 decades in Newark. Back in the 1950’s and early 60’s when McCarrick was bishop he had his own special altar boys who accompanied him to confirmation events around the diocese. He would take some of his special boys to Italy to go skiing and and to study theology. The stories about the happenings at his beach house were an open secret.
I had a relative who volunteered a lot for the church. He was single. He was invited to join Newark priests on their summer vacations in Provincetown. The location of their vacations was pretty much public knowledge.
The church has a major problem. Just because the Boy Scouts and others are up to no good, it doesn’t make it right for the church to do this.
McCarrick wasn’t a bishop in NJ until the 1980s; he was in NY (and his first abuse allegations in NJ date to his tenure in NY).
The Church isn’t getting hammered financially for priests offending; it is getting hammered because the leadership swept it under the carpet while allowing the offenders to commit child rapes elsewhere.
The problem is hiding it while allowing the crimes to continue in other parishes/locations; THAT is why the Church is going bankrupt from these lawsuits. Employers aren’t necessarily liable when an employee commits a first offense (if the employer has done its due diligence); they are liable when they conceal it and the offender continues the crimes. The only defense I could offer for these crimes years ago was that the Church treated most sex offenders in the same manner as the government at the time; it believed in rehabilitation, and often the offenders were eventually re-assigned when mental health workers had deemed them “safe” (which in hindsight we realize is almost impossible).
This dynamic is what effectively prevents any workforce re-entry programs for released prisoners; I don’t believe there are legal safeguards for potential employers.
