The ancient Russian capital was far-famed for centuries, not only because of the splendid outlook of its churches, but also because of their quantity. Alas, many of those cultural and religious treasures were savagely destroyed during the Communist rule. Meanwhile, the Moscow population has grown quite substantially.
"The southwestern precinct of Moscow presently has 56 Orthodox churches, but 19 of them are located in temporary structures," says the spokesman for the Moscow church construction project. Thus, twenty new lots have been recently approved for building new churches.
Construction is funded by private donations from individuals and companies, both small and large. For instance, Nornickel, a mining company, has pledged nearly a billion rubles for the church “Olympic” complex in the North Butovo neighborhood.
The “Olympic” nickname is due to the intent of making the new church a religious center for Russian athletes. It will be dedicated to Prince St. Dimitry Donskoy (fourteenth century). The complex will include a historical museum with a panoramic display of the Kulikovo battle, an educational facility housing a high school and Sunday school, a spacious concert hall, fitness and workout units, a shelter for women and children in emergency, and a dining hall.
A park, a playground and an athletic field are also planned for the adjacent territory.
It would appear that Russia is in a race with the U.S. to build one Christian house of worship for every 20 new mosques in the U.S. built as moslem houses of pedophiliac ideology...
I don’t care for what Russia does to its neighbors but I do appreciate how they’re pushing back against godless communism.
Maybe Our Lady will appear to some Russian children and tell them that the Orthodox patriarch needs to consecrate Vatican City.
The story is told that someone once asked John Paul II where the priests would come from who would re-evangelize the West. “From Africa?” “No.” “From Asia then?” “No.” “Then from where, Holiness?” “From Russia!”
If Vatican repents, they’re always welcome home.
Polls say most Russians consider themselves Russian Orthodox, up to 75%.
Second are Protestant denominations totaling up to two million in over 4,000 churches.
Russian Roman Catholics number maybe one million.
Russian authorities tolerate most non-Orthodox denominations... well... except for Jehovah's Witnesses.
You may remember during the Holocaust thousands of German pacifist Jehovah's Witnesses were sent to the camps -- something about Jehovah's Witnesses that drives authoritarian regimes a little nuts.
Russians have a Muslim demographic time bomb. Russia has between 14 and 20 million Muslims which is 10 to 14 percent of the total population. Due to high Muslim birth rates, in 15 years Muslims will be 30 percent of the population. There are about 1.5 million Muslims in Moscow.
Unfortunately, for Russia communism broke the belief in God and it never recovered. Church attendance in Russia, is the lowest in Europe. Only 9% attend church once a month. Church attendance in the US is 25%.
